News from New London

New London Likes Dr. Nick, kinda.....
It seems Fall River's former superintendent is wrapping up his first year in New London and is getting mostly high praise. An article in "The Day" reports that Dr. Nick is getting good marks for progressive thinking, setting high standards, and strong leadership. However he is also getting criticism for being confrontational, dismissive and bullying.

Hmmmm.

It all sounds pretty familiar and it will be interesting to see if Dr. Fischer's experience in New London mimics his tenure here in Fall River. One interesting thing is quite unlike Fall River, he was praised for his handling of the budget process.

If Dr. Nick continues to receive high marks and New London sees improvement in their school system, would that mean that the chaos and the problems here might have been our own doing?

THIS, is why we need a casino in Fall River.
A story in the Boston Globe reports that the parents of a 1 year old and a 10 year old left their children in the car while they gambled at Foxwoods. The parents come from right here in Massachusetts, one in Dedham and the other from Milton, both were arraigned in New London Superior Court. It only goes to reason that if we had a casino here in Fall River they'd be so much closer that the negligent duo could have just left the kids at home!

Two weeks ago, a woman in Denver left her baby in the car while she went shopping in Walmart! This is why we need to ban Walmart. No! That's not enough! We need to ban all retail stores!

A babysitter in Florida left two children in a car while she got a facial in a salon. We need to ban salons! No more facials for Fall Riverites!

A man in Arizona left three small children in his car while he went drinking in a night club. We need to ban night clubs in Fall River!

There are many other instances of children left in vehicles at a variety of venues. Rather than continuing to list them, these three recent news stories more than suffice in debunking your attempt to make this appear to be something that only happens at casinos.

Until you similarly rail against stores, salons and night clubs, your feckless allegation against casinos is unveiled as being spurious, at best.

OK, I find this all pretty hilarious. I suppose however, that I should have seen it coming.

I wasn't trying to use this as a point of why we shouldn't have a casino. I was trying to be sarcastic about the stupidity of a couple of parents who apparently value gambling more than their kids.

I understand that there are negligent parents that leave their kids in the car at all sorts of venues. I recall a particularly sad instance at the laundromat at the top of President Avenue a few summers ago where 2 children died as a result. However, casino parking lots are frequently in the news for abandoned children.

and on and on and on......

While protecting children from death by parking lot may not be the #1 reason to protest the construction of a casino, it certainly is something important to think about when we look past the temporary construction jobs and face the reality of housing a casino in Fall River.

How about the article about the irresponsible Mayor that left his City locked up in a used 59 Studebaker with it's windows rolled up so no one could smell the uncollected trash , while he went gambling at the new "Destination Casino" in his own City, Fall River. They all died from Heat Pros-tration-titution.

So, Lefty, are you going to do some blogging about your stance on the casinos? Or are you laying low for some reason. Please take a stand. It is getting boring around here with just one Irish blog to read.

I haven't blogged about casinos in a bit because it's tough to keep saying the same thing over and over. But there are some points worth talking about and I'll try to get a new post together.
