Conflict of Interest?

A comment on a recent post brought up an interesting question...

I noticed Sterile Snooze Editor Lisa Strattan's Boyfriend Jimmy Mathes is on the mayor's transition team.
Doesn't that failing paper know what a conflict of interest is?

Does this constitute a conflict of interest? It's an interesting question. The original comment sadly included a derogatory comment that has fueled comments all on its own. In order to focus attention on whether this is a conflict of interest and to bring people into the conversation that may not have followed the original comment thread, I am posting the relevant comments here.

The real issue isn't...what is the issue is the conflict of interest...this is why The Herald News has zero credibility, no trust, no value in the community

You can't blame Lisa Strattan for this conflict of interest. Mayor Flanagan asked Jim Mathes to be on his transition team and Jim accepted. How is Lisa Strattan to blame for that? How could Lisa Strattan prevent that? Certainly she can't prevent people from accepting the Mayor-elect's invitation.

You can't prevent it if you're an insecure woman who does ANHTHING her boyfriend says. She sed to cover up for the Herren boys wen she was with Al, now this. You can bet The Sterile Snooze will believe anything Jim Mathes believes. In a REAL relationship, one partner could say, "Don't take the post, it's against my ethics."

I guess this is payback for he Sterile Snooze endorsement.

The ISSUE is Strattan's conflict of interest

That said, let's try to refrain from name calling.

That said, I really don't see this as a conflict of interest on the part of Lisa or Herald News. If Lisa herself were part of the transition team that would be different.

A newspaper editor should not have a live-in boyfriend serving on the transition team of a mayor endorsed by the newspaper of which she is editor. That is a conflict of interest

The last commenter stated it well and that's the way it should've been stated originally when someone was making their case but when you use certain words it does take away from the point you are trying to make and does become an issue. Extremely insulting and degrading language is never needed in a debate. I agree that sexist, degrading remarks should be stricken from the record Lefty. Unless you want people to feel that this is a safe community to sign on and spread hate.

The ISSUE is Strattan's unethical behavior but her supporters want to discuss sexism because the behavior is unethical.

I found this on the Society of Professiojnal Journalists Web Site

Is this just sexism, too?

Journalists should be free of obligation to any interest other than the public's right to know.

Journalists should:

—Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.

— Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility.

— Refuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment, and shun secondary employment, political involvement, public office and service in community organizations if they compromise journalistic integrity.

— Disclose unavoidable conflicts.

— Be vigilant and courageous about holding those with power accountable.

— Deny favored treatment to advertisers and special interests and resist their pressure to influence news coverage.

— Be wary of sources offering information for favors or money; avoid bidding for news.

Well we all knew the HN supported Flanagan before they endorsed him.Though Bob was there hero on his first day. They applauded him when he fired dept. heads. All of a sudden he became there enemy.... Politics is a strange thing. Look at whats going on with Ray Hague. he is now the mayors right hand man!

good politics...yes...appropriate...probably not...payback, probably......Conflict of Interest....given everything we see going on in THIS City (Auditor appointed by a Mayor to board of Directors of the Housing Authority, then still no timely audits performed and rates established by enterpriuse funds insufficient to meet the needs....not cool)probably pales in comparison to many that exist and have existed for years. But I do sympathetic to your feelings on this.

Hmmmm...Maybe someone we both know is trying to bring out a point....and test to see what we say? wouldn't be the first time someone from God knows what "camp" tried to get "evidence" that your blog or mine was leaning in a particular direction...lol...if that's the case, just ask?...direct is ALWAYS the better way to go...even if you are an elected official (and yes, we KNOW you watch the blogs even though you say you've never heard of us), just ask away...using a screen name will protect you...after all, none of us is working for Ol' Hamhocks LaRue and spying on you!
PEACE....and keep blogging!

Or maybe someone just wants to discuss the same issue on different blogs.
Stratta is just like Mike Herren and Bernie sullivan...she says what her boss tells her to say

There are bigger and more direct conflicts of interest going on before the zoning board and city attorneys, in the froed and other municipal offices that you should be worried about more than the local newspaper and radio stations.

A corrupt government cannot exist without corrupt media..Strattan and her men are part of the problem.I'll give my money DIRECTLY to charity before I'll give to the corrupt Sterile Snooze Holiday(not even Christmas) fund.

Anonymous said...

The Herald News isn't the problem, WSAR is the problem! Or are they both the problem? I would have a hard time arguing against more media outlets and better media outlets serving the city, the competition might produce some positive results. That would be a nice change!

Lefty said...

Personally I think there is much more of a conflict by having 2 sitting city councilors on the transistion team than the boyfriend of...

I'm also not sure what the reason is for all the Herald bashing. The Herald endorsed Correia but has had no problem being critical of him.

How is WSAR a problem they are involved in the community they are a partner ..Hurricane raised 10000 for the Salvation Army in one show last week ...the Herald news and thier staff arent from here and talk negatively, promote negativity ,and bottom feed to sell papers please..

Anonymous said...

Thanks for dropping by Hurricane to give your spin but you and your station still stink.

Anonymous said...

Funny, how the hurricane claims to have raised all that money on the last day of the campaign when thsoe involved know he was no the main person pushing it at the station or in the community. What he does not get is that pledging on a radio show does not always equal the actually cash. On the HN, oooooh boy

Anonymous said...

The few times I have heard Mike Herren speak or the Hurricane as I guess he is known, and the few times that I have heard Leo Pelletier speak I just shake my head. I don't doubt that either one is popular in the community but I have to wonder why?

I know when people from outside of the community hear either Mike or Leo speak they get an image in their head that everyone from Fall River sounds like that and that everyone from Fall River is an uneducated, barely literate moron.

Herren and Pelletier do so much to hurt the image of this city yet many people in this city can't even see that and continue to elevate them as idols. They aren't idols they are the opposite, they are role models for how not to speak or what not to do rather than for what you should do or say.

In some communities Mike Herren or Leo Pelletier would be ridiculed or maybe considered the comic relief but in this community they are looked at as leaders which is completely ridiculous and a sad commentary on the state of our city.

Anonymous said...

Why do people pick on Mike if he is helping the city out - speaking specifically on the post up top about the turkey drive. Yes, he may have an ego but do you not have to have one to be good on the radio?
Please be nice when people are being nice.

Anonymous said...

Mike Herren nice? I hope that's true and he is turning over a new leaf because his reputation is for being a bully, he is just a pitbull on a leash that the Karam's unleash at the right time on whatever politicians they don't like.

The Sterile Sooze helped organize the seante debate and Lisa's boyfriend was moderator!!!!! Can't this fool do anything on his own.
We get it, Lisa. You're pushin' 60 and it's hard to get someone

Where are the investors for "more and better media outlets" going to come from in a city where the average income is under $29,000 and the unemployment is forever stuck in the 14-16 percent range?

Like it or not, newspapers and radio stations are there to make a profit for their ownership..and I doubt that the Herald News or WSAR is rolling in cash right now..

Honesty and integrity don't cost anything and neither does firing unethical bums like Strattan

The way I see it the Herald News did us all a favor by exposing the Correia administration so everyone could see what was really going on. The result was voters tossing Correia out after one term. He didn't even survive the primary! And the paper is still sticking it to them. Just read the stories about what some of those former power brokers are trying to pull over at Diman.

Our loyal HN basher is one of those dolts responsible for the Correia Debacle. He's only upset because the HN nailed his carcas to the wall. I say good job Herald News. Keep sticking it to those guys. They deserve it! Especially the poor fellow whose anti-HN posts make it clear he's so worked up that the newspaper could establish residency in his mind. BWAHAHAHAHA

You want to good reason to complain look at that fake journalist at O'Journal. Rick Oliveira is a complete moron who has no control over his emotions. Ever listen to him on WSAR? He's the only guy in Fall River who can make Mike Herren sound intelligent by comparison. It was truly entertaining to see him waddling down the street with Herren in the Christmas parade. They looked like a couple of grounded Macy's balloons!

Anonymous said...

Ric Oliveira is intelligent and articulate, the complete opposite of Mike Herren. In fact, I don't even know what Ric Oliveira is even doing at that sinking ship they call WSAR.

Anonymous said...

Ric Oliveira is awesome...

Anonymous said...

There is somethng that has been bothering me for a week and after I read this posting I can't help but believe it is all connected.
Let me explain:
I got a call last week from Oliveira asking if I was involved in the SouthCoast Alliance, since I am part of the SC Partnership group. I said yes and no. He then asked if I knew why Flanagan was not being allowed to speak at the debate but Mayor Lang of New Bedford was. He also asked how much influence Biff Maclean has on the Alliance and if I had heard any rumblings about Maclean threatening Flanagan if he went afer the Peabody project. I had no answers for him. He said I was the fourth person to claim no knowledge of any of this. He then asked If i was going to the $100,000 dollar fundraiser for the Governor which Maclean and K.R. Resendes are holding tomorrow. I said no as I have a family engagement and $250 is a lot even for me.
The next day I asked around about the mayor flap, not even sure there was one. I got a call on Friday from New Bedford which told me not to worry about Oliveira, that "he would not be a problem much longer." I asked how? It sounded a bit scary. The answer was that the effort to get him removed from the HN was "almost complete"
Apparently, the Herald News owns OJournal. Now I am someone who would rather bring people together than let things explode so I was astounded to think that any of this could be true. On Saturday, Flanagan was not at the debate, which I thought odd since he is a Coakley supporter. I also now know that Maclean is connected to the Peabody project and was told today that Maclean is trying to get the governor to fund the Peabody project in return for more fundraisers in order to stick it to Flanagan and Tony Cordeiro. Again, I am not sure how this is all connected but I am also told that Maclean has said this project "has to happen."
Why a former New Bedford politician is so involved in Fall River may seem odd to many, but not when you realize how much power this guy stil has- even in Fall River.
Now, having served with Sean Burke on a local board, I do not see him as being someone who can be manipulated into firing someone because of outside political pressures, but if it were to happen, I know I would feel guilty as hell as my raising Oliveira's questions seems to have intensified what seems to be a concerted effort. I also see where he is now called fat and a "fake journalist" and it just seems that someone is working really hard to convince us and perhaps people inside the Herald News that he needs to go. It is all strange to me as I honestly think he is one of the most honest and hard working journalists I have ever encountered and has helped out mine, and many organizations in the city, especially when it comes to the needy or things for kids.
I don't know all the history here but seeing that the Flanagan snub did not appear in the newspaper, I doubt considering the connections to New Bedford we seem to now have in Fall River, we will find out.

The Herald News has been strange for a while now, I think it's not focused on the prize and it shows. The community apathy toward the paper is at an all time high and if they ever want any credibility they must fire Lisa Stratton.

Anonymous said...

Lisa Stratton puts on a smile for Jim Mathes and he returns the favor, now everybody should be smiling, but Jim needs money to keep a smile and to put on a happy face for a friend or two.

The Herald is irrelevant...their endorsements prove that, but at least unethical editor Lusa Straatan got her b/f on Flanagan's transition team

Anonymous said...

Keri Rodrigues kissed Lambert's rear until he placed Poulin on leave.

Anonymous said...

Keri Rodrigues was probably the first talk show host who was fair and balanced with Lambert. Mike Moran drooled over Lambert for years while all other hosts like the Citizen Smith that another commenter mentioned bashed Lambert. Barry beat up Lambert, Paul Giammarco did too for a while. I am shocked that Keri and Moran lasted as long as they did with their treatment of Lambert since supposedly the Karams hated him but sooner or later everyone leaves WSAR either because they didn't talk the party line or on their own because they realize what a sorry station it is. Is there anyone left there that is decent? The only people left are probably there because they can't find jobs elsewhere, people like Mike Herren who probably couldn't pass a CORI check at any other reputable radio station.

Smith was cool but only lasted a few weeks.

WOW HURRICANE IS SO AWESOME HE IS THE MOST BESTEST TALK SHOW HOST EVER AND HAS ZILLIONS OF LISTENERS YOU CAN'T DENY HE'S THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME

Seriously? You come on here and type in all CAPS with this type of crap? Get over yourself Hurricane. You are barely able to read and write. You breathe heave into the microphone. Many people stopped listening to all that mess a long time ago. You couldn't get a job at another radio station, no one would take you.

A good test might be whether there is an editorial on the lawyer situation in the paper today. The HN definitely would be bashing the current administration on this. Let's see if Lisa has anything to say on the mayor elect back peddling before he even gets in. They are all the same. They all take care of their friends. It will never change.

Anonymous said...

What back peddling? Flanagan said he would save the taxpayers money in the legal department. Is he saving us money or isn't he? Let's see the numbers after he gets in.

If Flanagan restructures the law department and saves us money then he kept his promise. If Flanagan spends the same or more money than Bob Correia then he didn't keep his promise.

Why would the Herald News editorialize when he isn't in yet and there are no numbers available? Seems like someone wants the media to jump the gun and start to bash Flanagan.

Get over it Hurricane lovers, your boy Bob Correia lost. Even the "popularity" of Hurricane and his dating Correia's family couldn't save Bob-O, lol, lmao.
