The Winner and Loser in last nights Mayoral Debate!

The big winner in last night's debate has to be Fall River Community Television. FRCTV has really proved that they are determined to be a major news source during local elections. I think we saw a big push in their election coverage in 2007 which has expanded in 2009 with candidate websites and the ability to watch content online.

Last night as Cathy Ann Viveiros and Will Flanagan squared off at the auditorium of the new Kuss Middle School people listened intently to their answers, not from the seats of the auditorium but from their homes or work. FRCTV's coverage allowed people to be engaged in local government. Their coverage allowed this debate to be viewed on television OR streamed on their computer.

Last night, I was not able to attend and I was not in Fall River to watch this on TV. I was thrilled at the ability to watch this on my computer. Moments before the debate started I thought to myself that FRCTV has really become a prominent source for election coverage.

And then.....

It didn't work. Oh, it did here and there. Occasionally the sound would disappear and then comeback and then the whole thing would drop out for minutes at a time. Sadly, it seemed to not work more than it did work, making my viewing experience disappointing at best. I think these technical difficulties also make FRCTV last night's loser too. Still the potential is exciting and I hope this is the start of more local coverage available online.

So, who won the debate last night? Feel free to share your opinion and tell us why.

The people of Fall River lost last night. This debate proved the same thing that the first debate proved, that Will and Cathy aren't ready for prime time. Better than Bob? Yes either one will be. Is that really that high of a standard to beat? No.

Based on her track record over the last 2 years you know CAV is lying when she speaks. The other guy isn't saying much at all but at least you can't lie when you don't say much of anything at all.

Anyone catch that South Park episode where it was Giant Douche vs. Turd Sandwhich in the election?

Omission is a form of lying.

Okay,
Do you remember a time in Fall River when both major media outlets worked together. WSAR and the Herald News. It was a time when debates were not exclusive properties of each entity. It was time when you would see Herald News and radio staff on the same debate panels, at times alternating moderating duties. Debates would be broadcast live and we would sit in our living rooms and hear the debates and rush to pick up the newspaper in the morning to see the pictures and analysis and comments from people in the audience on who they thought won. Betwen the paper and radio many families had great political discussions, The radio would have people from the paper on the next day and they would talk about what happened.
Now, what do we have?
We have a newspaper that will not acknowledge anything the radio station does whether that is change the color of the bridge or coments made by politicians on the radio and we have a radio station that will not cover herald news debates. And even there is gets nastier. The Chamber had asked WSAR to have a certain Herald news employee moderate the debate but because it was on the radio, the Chamber was told "the Herald News will not allow employees to do anything special with the radio station anymore " - whatever that means.
And so a debate occurred last night. Very little if any discussion about it on radio today. The WSAR debate happened today - I expect it will not even be acknowledged by the paper tomorow. Meanwhile FR Cable loses out on signal and the city loses out on true coverage all due to some vindictive people at the paper and radio station who act like children.
What you think it is all the radio station?
Ask any person in this city who has been involved in politics and in any organziation outside the chosen BOLd and SMILES, who is more vindictive in the media and you will learn that the nastyness is often printed and scores are settled in ink or lack thereof. And due to this fact the people of fall river are the real losers in these debates.

I think Bernie Sullivan of WSAR started the nasty wars with his scathing editorials about the newspaper. Maybe they should fire him and start over.

didn't bernie hire lisa at the paper?

Anonymous said...

It started before Sullivan's editorials. The HN barred their employees from appearing on WSAR. Lisa Stratton was a regular contributor on the morning show and part of WSAR's election night coverage at one time.

Why would the Herald News want anything to do with WSAR when the radio station smeared the newspaper with a series of February editorials about its supposed bias towards Correia?

Why you want to see anyone from WSAR doing anything to begin with?

I would think BooBoo and Jimbo are pretty much popping puppy downers on a daily basis now that Bob is gone..

Given the information I've learned. this will probably be the final local election cycle either outlet will cover..the HN is running on fumes from a financial standpoint, and WSAR is being shopped around on a daily basis..

That's not news, WSAR has been shopped around for years but nobody wants to buy it. Tiny listening audience, been inside there once and it has a certain
70s feel so you would really need to upgrade the interior and all the equipment but why waste the money if no one is listening anyway?

But when you have millions you can afford to run 1 of your businesses like a hobby or as a tool to beat up the politicians who won't agree with your other business deals.

If it was a legit operation do you think half of the people they have had on there in the past or now would even be on the air or see the light of day? They hire monkeys and pay them peanuts. Any quality staff that they manage to fool into working there leaves shortly after they figure out it's a dump. The people left are the ones that can't find jobs anywhere else.

wsar has wanted marc dion on the air for years

I think there are people from the herald news on here deflecting their own inadequacies with the familiar pretentiousness that fails to address the many disappointments and lack of judgment shown when the paper has gone beyond a newspapers’ normal bounds to protect community “pets” and publically humiliate and lambaste so many with little if any account.
While the Karams are the Karams, the newspaper deserves no pass in the above critiques and for those whose familiar pretense is laced throughout the paper’s dishonest defense here, a reminder: your pathetic command of English marks your prose.
Your disdain for the radio and those who do professionally what your quant webcasts fail to do on an amateur level, exposes much. Is it not hilarious that a columnist from your staff could be suggested for the radio when one considers the level of articulation offered on your pages?
One wonders if the newspaper would just assume destroy the radio in order have no one question the ineptitudes as so often is done by talk show host Steve Urban from the Standard Times. Perchance most of the people at the radio station are actually professionals who offer a lot to fall river . So sad the intense consternation focused on the talkers when the community is failed more broadly by the pestilence infecting the paper.

Yup, sounds just like a self-righteous Bernie Sullivan WSAR editorial? Is that you Bernie? Seriously, read the remarks from commenter at 9:50 then maybe sprinkle in a couple of verses from the Bible and tell me that ain't our boy Bernie?

We are all still waiting for the first ever WSAR editorial criticizing Sheriff Hodgson. We figure that probably won't happen since you are on his payroll in edition to the WSAR payroll. So do you record the WSAR editorials before, during or after your work day at the Bristol County Sheriff's Office? Inquiring minds want to know. Conflict of interest anyone?

Hey yo, Bernie Sullivan, I know you're high on your own sense of self satisfaction right now, and I'ma let you finish, but everybody knows that the Hurricaine is the best hot air filled blowhard to misspell big words and use malapropisms to get his point across! Maybe if you breath really heavy and grunt a lot...

A candidate I know said the Herald News endorsement interview was "lisa and two gay guys," and Lisa told stupid jokes and giggled and the gay guys kept quiet n wrote it down. At the end of the inteview, the candidate thanked them and asked for their votes and all three of them said they couldn't vote because they lived out side Fall River. What is wrong with the non-local paper?

I think it's simply frightening that the HN has no connection to this community

Anonymous said...

I prefer that the reporters don't live in the community. Look what happens when they are connected to Fall River (Lisa Strattan, Bernie Sullivan).

Less conflict of interest when they are out of towners.

the hn was so much better when they had writers like paula kerr, pete levesque, john mcavoy....except for marc munroe dion..its a corporate rag like lng..just wants to take money out of fall river

"Less conflict of interest when they are out of towners."

WHAT?
NO
"There is Less conflict of interest when people are professionals"

There is less conflict of interest when people are not egomaniacs

There is less conflict of interest when the people are put ahead of social interests

"#10 RE-ELECTING AN INCUMBENT IS SILLY, PROMOTING ONE IS DANGEROUS."

Electing someone who has no experience whatsoever in managing anything larger than their checking account is?

"# 9 SHE HAS A RECORD OF IGNORING
VOTERS, OVER 7,000 OF THEM."

As someone who signed that petition, I can say that I think she made the wrong decision, however, I respect the way she came to the decision, on her own (not with a mandate by King Bob).

"# 8 SHE'LL WELCOME STRIP CLUBS."

Even if that is true, which it is not, what is your point? I have a constitutional right to go to a strip club. You do not have the constitutional right to deny me this.

# 7 SHE MOVED TO WESTPORT TO TAKE
TAKE A BREAK, MAYORS CAN'T
TAKE BREAKS!

O.K. So moving out of the city is against the rules now? Ever think that maybe she moved away and then when she saw the state of FR, moved back b/c she thought she could help? I think its great that she picked up her life and moved back to the city she grew up in. Mayors can't take breaks? No long weekends, no vacation time? I find this hard to believe.

"# 6 HER BLATANT DISRESPECT FOR VETERANS! NOT ONCE DID SHE SPEAK UP IN DEFENSE WHEN BOBBO REMOVED & REDEDICATED AN AMERICAN HERO'S MEMORIAL!"

I was there through every step of this monstrosity. Come to think of it: I never saw Will there either.

"#5 WAS IT LIES OR INCOMPETENCE WHEN SHE FAILED TO PREVENT THE LAYOFFS AS PROMISED"

As one member of the City Council, I don't think she could do this on her own...

"#4 SHE COULDN'T KEEP A JOB IN MALL MANAGEMENT, HOW CAN SHE MANAGE A CITY? "

Is this the best you have? I am sorry for you if your argument comes down to this.

"#3 BANCRUPTCY IS NOT AN INDICATION OF SOMEONE WITH GOOD FINANCIAL SENSE. "

Do you know the situation behind the bankruptcy? Many bankruptcies are filed for very good reasons, medical bills, divorce, theft by a family member. I do not know if this was the case for CAV, however, the bankruptcy protections are there for a reason.

"#2 WESTPORT WOULDN'T ELECT HER, WHY SHOULD WE ? "

Because she is the best candidate for the job.

"#1 SHE STOOD BEHIND BOB CORREIA'S EVERY DECISION FOR 14 MONTHS!!!
CAV IS..............BOB, WITHOUT THE COMB-OVER."

I have stated before that I disagree with some of her votes while on the City Council, however, finding a political candidate that you agree with 100% of the time is nearly impossible. I respect the way she made her decisions (doing her own research)even though I may not have agreed with all of her votes.

I think Anonymous' shot at the 'pathetic command of English' would substantially more credence if not for the wrongly spelled publically (it is publicly, according to the AP Stylebook)quaint (it should be quaint) and ineptitudes, which has no plural; and the gramatically incorrect
newspapers’(it is singular and therefore should be a newspaper's) and just assume which should, of course, be just as soon.
Perchance you are a flaming a-hole. That grammatical enough for ya?
