Fall River Thoughts

And an Eagle rises from the ashes...

Of course I've just talked about the dire situation at the former Central Congregational Church. Not only does its closing cast a bleak picture for any chance of working out the the financial problems the school finds itself in, it has also left several couples stranded with no refunds and no place to hold their reception.

So the Herald News reports that Jerry Donovan has stepped forward and offered the remodeled Eagle as an available venue. For couples who are facing a wedding nightmare, Donovan may have just saved their day. The Eagle may not be as majestic as the Great Hall but it is an incredible location. I hope this works out for all involved.

It's Spring, now where's that shovel?

The weather has been warming up recently and Spring is officially here. Soon people will be planting flowers and doing yard work. Of course here in the South End the biggest landscaping project will be done by Pat Casey when she oversees the moving of McGovern's monument and the restoration of Miller Green. I've already had people ask when this was going to happen. Pat, don't wait too long on this, let's get this behind us and make it right. Where's that shovel?

A Tip for the Republican Road Trip.

The Massachusetts GOP is launching a grass roots effort to rebuild the state party. This maiden effort is likely to resemble the maiden voyage of the Titanic. As a Republican I would love to see the state party rebuild but it's not going to happen if the party sticks to the 'your either with us or you're not' mentality that has gripped it for far too long.

You don't have to look any further than in our own backyard to see the problem. Fall River, like most of Massachusetts is a very Democratic place. Yet, our local party leaders continue to preach and beat the bully pulpit on every conservative view while at the same time labeling everyone Republican who dare disagree a RINO (Republican In Name Only).

News to Linda Rapoza and every other blockhead in the leadership of "our" party, this is Massachusetts, it is a liberal state. For decades and decades this state and most of New England had a great reputation for liberal, moderate, Republicans! New England Republicans held firm to the cornerstones of the Republican Party, such as smaller government and fiscal conservatism. Now as the national party continues to drift right, and right into insignificance, more and more New England Republicans find themselves pushed of of their party by these morons who tell them they don't belong!

By constantly championing the issues to the right and far right and ridiculing any party member to the left of that YOU have eroded the party base. Voters who once believed in the ideals of the Republican Party now find themselves registering as independents and wondering who will represent their views. Particularly in a state like Massachusetts the party should be reaching out to moderate Republicans and building coalitions on the views that they DO share. They should continue to reach out and firmly shake the hand of independents and conservative Democrats.

If the Republican Party is going to insult moderates by calling them RINO's, if they are not going to reach out and work to build on common grounds, they should save the effort, save the gas, and save their breath.

Excellent post.

The local leaders of the Republican party are whackjobs. Candidates who are Republican in heart and mind, shy away from the label on the ballot because it will likely lead to defeat.

However, there have been several elections where the voters have elected a Republican Governor. I don't think Governor Romney did much to support his fellow Republicans in the Legislature.

If there is going to be a growth of Republicans in Massachusetts, the party has to stay away from the divisive national issues (ie. abortion, war).

With the economic crisis, state budget cuts, and $175,000 patronage jobs, there is an audience among the electorate for fiscal conservatism.

If Republicans have a good response to how smaller government will create jobs, provide better education, and reduce crime, then those will be candidates that I will consider.

I'll take a liberal Republican (Chaffee) over a Blue Dog Democrat (Finneran) any day, but I have to admit there is occasionally a need for bigger government when it comes to regulating the greed associated with our failed capitalist system.

There was nothing 'failed' about the capitalist system. It worked as was planned. Take all the money from poor and give it to the rich...

This is a little off topic, but there was an article in the Boston Herald on Tuesday, March 24th concerning the town of Braintree. Apparently Braintree was shorted a million dollars by developers according to the MassHousing Finance Agency. It appears the developers may have lied about profits in order to avoid paying what they owed. Some of the developers are named Fish. Wondering if this is the same Fish family developing 64 Durfee St.

Sure is just google Fish and or Peabody.

Saunders School sold to house homeless families

By Jill Harmacinski
jharmacinski@eagletribune.com

LAWRENCE — A majority of city councilors last night agreed to sell the Saunders School for $450,000, drawing boos from some residents upset over plans to turn it into housing for homeless families.

Councilors voted 6-2 to sell the 243 S. Broadway property to Peabody Properties of Braintree last night. The developer wants to build 16, two-bedroom apartments for homeless families in the historic school. Its proposal also includes a play area for children, 26 parking spaces, and access to support services, including counseling, job training and day care.

But many area residents fought the development proposal, mainly due to size and the congested area it was being built in. Others worried about the families and problems such a development might attract.

Last night, Barbara Jones of Greenhill Street said the city has "plenty of Section 8 housing already" and questioned why the developers didn't want to buy property in Andover, North Andover and Methuen for this type of housing.

Peabody Properties, in response to the neighbors after a first meeting in January, came back to the table with a smaller plan that included more parking and a bigger play area for the children.

Councilor-at-large Roger Twomey thanked Peabody Properties for its effort, but said he could not support the sale because of residents' concerns.

Is anyone else getting completely tired and bored with Barry Richard? He spend 3 hours a day trashing Democrats (every Democrat except Bob Correia), but if you call to criticize Bush, Romney or any other Republican, he drops you like a bad habit and bemoans "partisan" criticism. The act used to be humorous, although never informative. Now it's old old OLD! What do you think?

I stopped listening a very long time ago!!

I stopped listening to Barry Richard a long time ago. Barry fits the phrase: "He does not allow the facts to get in the way". He is an extremely poor talk show host. And now I am hearing that you cannot critisize Bob Correia on his show? Bob Correia is an extremely poor mayor.

Plus I received an "action alert" about Barry and it said he has been bashing Barney Frank and Jim McGovern about the LNG battle.

Barry must be on some great drugs. Barney and Jim have done a great job with LNG. They even spotted Barry's friends in Washington trying to screw Fall River.

And do not start with Bob and LNG. That man lied about his legisaltion and he served on the LNG Commission and DID ZERO!

"They even spotted Barry's friends in Washington trying to screw Fall River."

I sure would like to know more about this. Can the Action Alert be pasted into the blog so we can all read it?

Barry who? Call me when you are talking about someone relevant to Fall River news and politics.

Barry does not care about Fall River. He is only here for the paycheck. I have seen through him since day one. He is oftentimes totally unprepared for his show. Even the hurricane sounds more intelligent than Barry half the time. All he can do is ramble on against Margaret and the democrats. He never takes a stand against the Mayor, even when he knows the Mayor is dead wrong. He lies and gives out erroneous info so many times, like when he denied denied denied that they were going for a 24 % retroactive pay cut. He just is a bad host, I don't listen to him at all any more. I wish he would stay in New Bedford where he belongs.

the only bad host is herren all you hear is is breathing its really annoying

Maybe the Hurricaine finally got to him. I heard lefty is being held down in the makeshift "Gitmo" in the basement of WSAR with other "dissidant" bloggahs. Notice that Shamrock and FRC haven't posted in a while either. Something's amiss here.....

The Hurricane has put the bloggers out of business!!!They tried to RUIN him and he just kept on grinding..Fall River Style !! Lets face the Hurricane is the last man standing

Actually, I'm still here to hate on the Huricaine, so I wouldn't say he's the last man standing. More like the last man kinda hunched over, leaning against a wall or a toilet stall to keep his balance. Then he'll use the barstool as a walker to stumblebum his way home. "Last man standing" indeed, puh-leeze....
