A Ratings Hurricane

It seems no matter what the topic that somehow, someway, someone will eventually insert a comment about Mike "The Hurricane" Herren.

Now Mike Herren has been the host of WSAR's afternoon drive for a little less than a year now. He can be rough around the edges. He lacks polish and often seems to skip the research and go with his gut. Still, despite his flaws, I will admit that there are times when I have tuned in and have enjoyed his show.

Herren has his fans and he has his critics but it gets a bit sickening for a vocal minority to constantly insert him into every discussion. Really sickening.

Here is the latest example from a comment on Fall River-tastic:

BAD NEWS FOR BLOGGERS..HURRICANES ratings are in and his show is off the charts..now what are you going to say????

What am I going to say?

Show me some proof. Back up the statement. Let's see the Arbitron report. Here's my email: aviewfrombattleshipcove@gmail.com send me a copy!

Give me the data. I won't reveal the numbers, I know that would be against the law. But if the data shows that his ratings are better than Keri's and I can back that up. I'll state it here. If he is number one in the Providence/Fall River market I'll be glad to say it.

I have nothing personally against Mike Herren. This guy has taken a lot of knocks some deserved and some uncalled for. If his show is doing that well in the ratings congratulations to him. But, show me the proof and I'll let his naysayers take notice.

Otherwise let's stop talking about Mike Herren unless it is related to the post.

Thanks!
Lefty

Now you are complaining about too much hurricane after all the nasty lies and attacks on him.You are kidding right??Dont start a fight you cant finish ,his friends are just starting to find out about the trash that goes on about him on these blogs. The character assination that has gone on is criminal. We will not stand for it ,we will out every blogger,we will hold them accountable for every lie and attack. What you dont understand is how micheal herren is wired ,the bullshit that goes on here only motivates him ,He is extremely competitive and will prosper because of the negativity. That is his history. When the ratings are made public we will be watchig to see how they are reported. We are only the first wave of the defenders of the hurricane, the line is long and we are ready. Its time to deal with it his show is hot and happening ,the volume of calls is outrageous and his audience is growing by the minute. Its time to pick another fight. We will be watching!!!

Anonymous said...

Sounds like another threat lefty, I say if the topic does not relate to him, delete the post-simple. If they want to hear him they can turn on the radio- simple.

Anonymous said...

What is the deal with the ratings, why would divulging the numbers be illegal????

Anonymous said...

The fact of the matter is. No one is talking about Herren. The only time he comes up is when the 'defenders' bring him up. There is no negativity going on here, or on any blogs. Herren and his 'defenders' are paranoid. Lefty, I agree, delete anything that isn't related to the topic of discussion. This should satisfy both the haters and defenders of Herren, and it will make a more civil environment.

This covers it:

Please feel free to comment but please try to follow these guidelines:

1. Please stick to the topic at hand.

2. Please do not represent an opinion as fact. If it’s your personal belief, or a ‘fact’ that you cannot back up with a source, it is an opinion.

3. No personal attacks. If you don’t agree with other commentors fine, feel free to say so but respect that they are sharing their opinion.

4. Let’s keep the trash talk to a minimum. You can make your point without resorting to calling people thugs, crooks, druggies etc.

5. You are welcome to share your opinions and views here; however, I get to decide what stays and what goes. I try very hard to let people have there say and have deleted very few comments. I’m just asking all of you to keep the conversation civil and intelligent.

Arbitron numbers are proprietary and owned by Arbitron. You can't have access to them, publish them, or use them in any way unless you pay for them.

I would venture to guess that if Mike is #1 anywhere, it's amongst AM radio stations ONLY and within the tiny nine digit zip code area that sales people at WSAR use to sell. (Fall River, Somerset, Swansea, portions of Westport -- areas where WBSM in New Bedford does not reach with it's signal, therefore no competition.) But even then I'd be surprised. Dan Yorke at WPRO still does ok in these areas -- and considering the alternative ...

Anonymous said...

Why do they keep the results so confidential?

Anonymous said...

Arbitron ratings are a sales tool. If WSAR used those "outrageous" numbers seriously (and not just commenting on blogs or in-house promos), that place would have to answer to people who now do not trust WSAR because of its reputation as a no-class 20 yearold hobby station. WSAR has decades of radio talent -- including Mike -- working there, but it still sounds like a bunch of rookies. You can't ask for my advertising money in this economy when you sound like that, no matter what numbers. Fall River deserves better quality media.

If you didnt talk about mike herren there would be no traffic it would be lefty talking to shamrock who is talking to k rod who is talking to tom paine who is talking to charlotte etc..Its funny everybody needs to see the truth in the ratings but EVERYBODY jumped when keri cried wolf and made up all those allegations everybody rushed to believe her and report on it .What a double standard!! How many people believe differently now.

Anonymous said...

NOBODY was running to delete posts whenTHE HURRICANE was getting slandered and attacked here on a daily basis..Are there two standards here one for friends of bloggers and one for HERREN.

Stick to the radio.

Anon 2:43AM, 1:57PM and 2:07PM

I'm sick of comments about Mike, good or bad, taking over the comment thread on my blog and on others. This one became a 'last straw' because it just represented the problem, a baseless comment with no facts to back it up and thrown into the comment section with no relation to the topic.

I have tried to be very tolerant of the comments people leave, and have tried very hard not to over moderate. However I certainly have deleted negative comments about Mike that I just felt crossed the line of decency. I've also locked out entire comment threads because of the childish trash talk.

I chose this comment to make the point with because someone decided it was a good idea to leave it on multiple blogs. Also I don't think it would be fair to Mike to 'highlight' a negative comment.

Truthfully, I don't really know Mike, some people tell me he's a great guy and others a thug. I don't think any of you leaving comments telling me "Dont start a fight you cant finish" and "we will out every blogger, we will hold them accountable for every lie and attack." does anything to help Mike's reputation.

Mike has lots of naysayers who would like to see him fail and personally part of me is pulling for him to be a success. After all everyone loves an underdog.

However Mike Herren is not the most important person in Fall River and he is not the focus of this blog. Going forward, I think the policy is going to be comments about Mike Herren that do not relate to the topic at hand will be deleted.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like the only way to keep the comments on topic.

The ratings not only show Mike doing considerably better this year over last they also show the new morning show host doing better than the same show during the Spring ratings period as was pointed out to me by my WSAR advertising executive.
As a soon to be advertiser of WSAR,(my ads will start in February) and a reader of these posts regularly I wanted to see the proof before I even considered the expenditure. Unless the station is in the practise of falsifying ratings and the arbitron logo, the station's rating are up even though the size of the audience is smaller. I was startled by the region's numbers.
How does a region go from 165,000 to 127,000 people in 9 months? WOW!
In dissecting the numbers, it seems the morning show above 12 in the ratings, while the afternoon show has picked up almost 30 percent more listenors in spring to winter comparison. The numbers shown for WBSM in New Bedford were patheticaly low. So, if you want to acertain the numbers for yourself and you are a business, I would advise doing what i did. It seems a bit more constructive than trying to discern the numbers from the blogs.
Mr. Anonymous

Radio said...

What that tells me is that they pulled the numbers from the zip codes that would put things in a favorable light -- not an honest look at what the numbers really are. It's not lying, it's just hoping your dumb enough not to know what you're looking at. 40k people didn't leave the region in 9 months. They just left the Arbitron report the sales rep decided to show you -- because the picture wasn't so rosy.

And wow -- someone trying to sell you something for alot of money told you "everything's fine here! look how fabulous we are! please buy these time slots at our low, low prices!" Boy! That's a surprise.

Anonymous said...

Can you explain why the ratings are not avaiable to the public? If I was purchasing ads I would want to see the whole picture.

So the sales rep should not be sharing them with a client.

All the internet experts are wrong again just got done listening to the hurricane he had 110+ calls in less than a hour .Are you going to call me a liar? Are you going to listen to Krod tell you its impossible? She has been proven wrong she said 80 was impossible in this market well if 80 is impossible hoe about 110.I heard it call by call now what..are you going to call out her for another LIE.

Hey Anonymous Watcher ...

I never called anyone crazy or a liar. It's not possible to take 80 real calls in an hour. Survey radio is not taking real calls, sorry.

KERI please understand what you are doing to your reputation. You stated this fight ..you called the man a joke,a has been ,a fraud, and those were the nicer things and all of a sudden 100 calls and a 30 percent increase in market share is no big deal. You cant have it both ways! Are you still going to close your eyes? This is Hurricanes first gig ? How many have you had and what happened with your other radio jobs? Can i ask that question? Is that appropriate??

Anonymous said...

Wow mike still trying to feel worthy after all these years.

Lefty,

The same mispelled post over and over. I guess there is no proof, just babble.

Lefty said...

Once again, I have no idea what this comment means.

Lefty said...

I heard the last few minutes of Herren's show last night and heard him say this is caller 99..and then 100! and finally ending on 110.

Yes, Keri mocked the idea of 80 calls, yes Keri was wrong. Yes, I realized she didn't realize the type of show Mike was doing when she made her statements. Yes I've seen Mike Moran do 'unofficial polls' and field 30 or more calls in 10 minutes, which would put Moran on pace for about 180 calls in an hour.

I heard parts of the show that Mike did for the top reasons for divorce and he got a ton of phone calls. I'm glad for him that is was a popular segment.

However this is not his first gig, Mike has done a sports show for years.

Anonymous said...

Interesting first Keri mocked herren for the 80 calls now its no big deal..hell mike moran can get 180..lefty is on keris blog saying girl your 6 minutes is better than 1 hr of hurricane..now lefty is a cheerleader for krod ..Everyone on these blogs trashed herren when he took over for keri they talked all kinds of shit called him incompitent but now after herren gets better ratings in half the time its dismissed. But one thing is for sure if you dont talk about the hurricane nobody will care, nobody will post, and nobody will pat attention

You finally get it=stick with the radio and get off the blogs where you are not wanted

All this ongoing debate really shows is how insignificant WSAR and Mike Herren really are.

If Herren were on, say, WPRO-AM, WEEI-FM, WTKK-FM or WBZ-AM, then the comments made about his so called talent and numbers might have some validity attached to them.

But, the fact is, Mr. Herren will never grace those sorts of airwaves..no Providence or Boston radio station General Manager or Program Director even knows who he is, or cares..and they never will.

The same goes for those who claim that national syndicators are beating a path to his door..let's hear who they are, and what kind of deal they're offering to someone in Arbitron market #179.

Fall River is an insignificant market when it comes to national advertising dollars, be it in radio or in print advertising..it deserves to be ignored, plain and simple, given the income and education achievement, or lack thereof, of the people who live here.

I'll make a wager right now--WSAR-AM will cease to exsist, along with the "hard copy" of the Herald News, within two years.

Then perhaps, more important issues can be discussed on the blogs

Lefty said...

Hey Friday's show seemed to be going pretty well and seemed to be pretty popular.

If he's getting good ratings fantastic for him and the station.

I think it was silly to say he couldn't do 80 calls in an hour. For that type of show of course it is possible. I had to assume that Keri didn't know what type of segment he was doing.

But when I listen to WSAR it is not to hear fluff. I want to hear local issues. Keri used to spend Friday afternoons doing trivia and stuff and most of the time I clicked the radio off. Keri's 6 minute podcast had more substance and more conversation than the segment Mike was doing in that last hour.

I've already stated that I have listened to and enjoyed Mike's show, but again the 110 call segment is not what I tune into and it is not what I think is good radio.

LEFTY EITHER STOP THE THREAD OR GET OFF YOUR LAZY BUTT AND GET THE FACTS.

What are his ratings?

How many calls did he take?

The Boston Herald reports Arbitron numbers all the time so they are available to the public. If his numbers are really that good then the radio station is sure to release them

And do you think anyone that lives outside of Fall River is going to want to listen to the good old school day stories? Do you think any politician outside of FallRiver is going have to go on his show to get their story out? The only he gets these calls is his drinking and sports buddies and his fathers friends call in. Good luck I hope you do move on.

Anonymous said...

Local radio station means local advertisers. If this guy is "SO BAD" what you need to do is go to these local companies and tell them in person that you will no longer BUY from them. Boycott outside of there locations.

Lefty said...

I have tried to get the Arbitron ratings in the past with little success.

I don't think it's fair to boycott local buisness because they advertise on WSAR. Local buisness needs to get the word out and WSAR is a viable way to do that.

Really, IF Herren is that bad, he'll get fired because of bad ratings. If his ratings are that good, well then the people who want to boycott will be a small minority.

I would say if you don't like his show, don't listen.

Anonymous said...

Lefty, That is a fair comment, I don't listen and I won't buy from his sponsors either,I don't feel I should support the radio station through advertising dollars?

Anonymous said...

The Karams are rich, it doesn't matter if the ratings are good or bad, they run the station as more of a hobby then as a business/professional radio station. Any real talent moves on from there within a few years or less, depending on how much bullshit they can tolerate on a daily basis. The rest that stay do so because they aren't all that talented and can't get a job elsewhere so they get stuck. And this comment shouldn't be taken as pro or con Hurricane, if Hurricane gets a lot of listeners and does a good job there and builds up his resume then he will undoubtedly get a higher paying job offer at another station and will move on as other talk show hosts have. I actually feel for him, they probably pay him horribly and I don't doubt that he cares about Fall River but at some point you have to move on from WSAR if you want to make a decent living. I wouldn't fault him for moving on to another opportunity that will allow him to better support himself and his family. I am sure though that his haters would criticize him if and when he gets another job offer and makes a move.

I would venture to say that if that radio station turns an actual profit that it just barely turns a profit. It's obvious it's a hobby for the Brothers Karam and it is more about having another tool to exert their power and influence in the area. If you can threaten to have your station bash politician x all day long then chances are he or she is either gonna say no and take their medicine/bashing or say yes and go along with whatever rules the Karams are trying to bend to get more coin in their pockets.

http://speakupfallriver.blogspot.com/2009/01/i-went-out-around-1130-this-morning-and.html
I went out around 11:30 this morning and the roads were TERRIBLE. Heading up Durfee Street toward Milliken Blvd. I discovered why the dangerously icy, snowy city roads had barely, if at all, been touched by plows. The Fall River Department of Public Works plows clearly had more important plowing to do in the parking lot of the Karam's 10 North Main Street (aka Bank of America/Karam Financial/First Bristol Corp.) building.

How will Correia justify this one? In the middle of a snowstorm, the roads covered in snow, cars fishtailing around me, and city plows aren't plowing the city streets, they are plowing the Karam's parking lot. This essentially put the interests of the Karams (for a building that probably isn't even open today

Personally I don't care one way or the other about Mike Herren. If the Hurricane is getting good ratings, good for him. It doesn't mean that his show is any good. I've listened and I have to tell you that most of the time I can't deal with how he talks to people. If you agree with him, it's "thanks for calling my man" or something like that. If you don't agree with him he tends to rush you off the line and interrupt what you're saying. That's okay, but I want to hear the many different sides to the local stories and not just his. So I've learned not to listen to him and I change the station. It's not personal.

On the few occasions when I have listened, I usually hear the same people calling in. So what though? The same people call all of the other shows too--Margaret, the Nurse, the UPS driver, Angel, etc. That's part of the show, you know? When you put it like that, Keri fans, you can't complain either, right? The "REGULARS" are part of the show. :-) I think they are anyway.

Sometimes I agree with people--even Mike--and sometimes I don't. That's life. I wasn't a Keri Rodrigues fan at all. I couldn't stand her show most of the time and I wouldn't listen to her. But when I did listen, at least she had her facts all laid out for you and she wasn't asking her listeners to do her research for her. (I've heard Mike do that several times.) If you care enough about an issue to put it on your radio show, Mike, then do your own research. This way you can back up your opinions with facts and really KNOW what you're talking about. That's how you get respect from everyone and not just your lackeys. I wouldn't dispute anything you said about sports Mike. I know that you KNOW what your talking about. There's a difference in you when you talk about sports and when you talk about the issues, did you know that? You hardly ever stutter when you're doing the sports stuff. You know it like the back of your hand. That's how you need to be with the other stuff. You need that confidence that comes from really knowing what you're talking about. I think you can do it, I really do. I don't think you're a stupid man. Like I've said before, I didn't listen to Keri's show most of the time either, but I could respect her because I know that she worked hard to get her information. She could prove it with web sites and information about where you could go to learn the same things. That's important.

Believe it or not Hurricane fans, you people are the main reason Mike is dogged on the blogs so much. You go to different blogs and insert some absolutely retarded comment--usually misspelled and not making any sense by the way--about Mike, his ratings, about how wonderful he is and how the bloggers need to stop the hating, etc. Your comments usually have absolutely NOTHING to do with the discussion that is going on and you expect the people there to not get irritated. (This post is different since it is about Mike.) I hardly ever post on blogs but you people annoy me to no end. I enjoy coming and reading about the local issues and you people ruin a good conversation. Most of the time I don't care about how wonderful Mike Herren is. He is not the most important person or topic in City of Fall River, you know. I'm sorry, but I think the school department problems, the rat issue, the Mayor, etc. are much more important than if Michael Herren has good ratings. If his show is getting good ratings, great. I'm happy for him. I just don't want to read about it every time I go to read someone's blog. Go kiss his a$$ somewhere else.

And people, give the whole 80 calls in an hour thing a rest. Keri wasn't talking about calls where you are answering a poll and anyone with more than two brain cells to rub together knows that. She was talking about calls where someone calls in and actually discusses an issue intelligently. I sincerely hope that Mike isn't doing all of these stupid poll shows to prove that more than 80 people can call in less than an hour. That would be stupid and I tend to think he's better than that.

That's all. I just had to unload some of the frustration that I'm feeling about this subject. It's really miserable coming to read the blogs sometimes. For crying out loud, people can't even say something nice about Mike without his lackey's coming and twisting it into something unrecognizable. It's ridiculous.

Anonymous said...

FOR somebody who doesnt care..that was a mouthful..i know one thing you are alot more wrapped up in mike herren than he is in you..the only reason that we are watching hurricanes backis because all the lies and bullshit that go on in these blogs.we are tired of it. mike herren is the most talked about person in fall river and it has been that way for awhile....we will make sure he is talked about fairly!!

Anonymous said...

Anon--I know, that is funny, isn't it. LOL

By the way, I am not "wrapped up in Mike Herren". I don't give him a second thought most of the time. At least not until I come to these blogs and have to read about how wonderful he is from all of you people. It is redundant and very frustrating. Mike is a public figure and I am allowed to have an opinion about how I think he's doing his job. That's what I posted, my opinion. Did I mention anything about his private life? No, I did not. And why is that? Because I don't give a flying crap about him other than how I perceive him on my radio. Getting redundant myself--you people who hi-jack the blogs make it very hard for someone like me who just wants to read some more about the issues and maybe learn something that I didn't know about them before. Different view points can open a person's mind and help them to see an issue more clearly.

I also added what I hope he'll think of as CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. He doesn't have to take it, I really don't care. But as a person who lives in Fall River, I do think it would be nice to have a fellow Fall River native succeed and do the absolute best that he can do. I really think that Mike could be more and better than what he is right now. He just has to really pay attention to what his critics, ie. the bloggers, are saying and realize that it isn't all just bullshit. Again, just an opinion.

And I have to wonder why he wants a job in the public arena if he's too thin skinned to accept all of the pros and cons that go along with it.
