Who do you want representing you?

Tomorrow is the primary election for state representative. Here in Fall River a quiet, dull campaign season is winding down to a mostly uneventful election.

Mike Rodrigues is running unopposed in his 8th district race. Kevin Aguiar is facing John Rodrigues in the 7th district race. In a field of dull, uninspiring camapaigns, Rodrigues has made a truly lackluster effort. So far what I know best about John Rodrigues is that he doesn't even take his candidacy seriously. There is little doubt that it will be Kevin who will face CJ Ferry in November.

The one truly interesting race is in the 6th district race. Incumbent David Sullivan is facing a challenge from City Councilor Linda Pereira. Now personally I like Dave Sullivan. I admire the fact that Dave has taken some very unpopular stances in the past, such as when he stood alone in his opposition to tearing down Watuppa Heights. I admire the fact that Dave was willing to stand for what he believed, despite it not being popular or politically savvy. Much has been made about Dave not being in any leadership positions, but how much leadership do you really have when you are beholden to others to get those positions?

With the prediction of low voter turnout tomorrow it's crucial that if you're even thinking about voting that you get out there and do it. A low voter turnout simply allows the minority to speak for the majority. Before heading to the voting booth read everything you can about the candidates running and make the best, more informed choice you can.

I hope the following links prove informative and helpful.

Lefty,

Another valuable website from the state office of campaign and policital finance. Linda Perreira appears under "new filers " but she has not revealed WHO her contributers are. My understanding is she is required by law to file 8days prior to the election?

If you call the state at
617.979.8300
they will tell you she has not filed and has been sent a notice that it was due!! She is assessed a $10.00 a day fee for every day she has not filed which means nothing since the election is tomorrow!! To further pursue you need to speak to Greg Burn legal counsel

I called the state at
617.979.8300

I was told she has not filed and has been sent a notice that it was due!! She is assessed a $10.00 a day fee for every day she has not filed which means nothing since the election is tomorrow!! I indicated that would not deter anyone and to make a decision on the election I wanted to know who contributed to her campaign. I was told to further pursue you need to speak to Greg Burn legal counsel

That is really funny...a $10 a day fine! And meanwhile, the day after the election, she can turn in the reports, pay $90, and say she "forgot." Meanwhile, when we vote tomorrow, we don't know who's backing her. Talk about laws with no teeth.

Lefty said...

I'm still chuckling about her donating $80 to Dave Sullivan.

Anonymous said...

This should become public knowledge today!!!!!
Call the herald and wsar!!!

Anonymous said...

The $80 Linda gave was probably before she decided to run for State Rep, obviously Linda felt Dave was doing a good job and gave him money but then when she was talked out of running for Probate and into running against Dave she had a change of heart at that point and suddenly thought Dave was doing a bad job. Yeah right!

You have to understand what this was, it was Correia putting her up to it to have a potential opponent namely Dave spend down any war chest he might build up for a potential rematch against Bob next year. Not that Correia really thought Linda would win, it was just about using her as a pawn. You can't forget either that John O'Neil is and was a huge Correia supporter, one of his top deputies during the Mayoral election so you couldn't have Linda who is one of Bob's sycopant 6 running against Bob's good buddy John O'Neil for the Probate position. That wasn't going to happen, Linda was not going to get Bob's backing or permission to run for that slot so she got steered in another direction. Isn't it interesting how machine politics works in our city? Very lovely!

Anonymous said...

I called sullivans office with the info above and will now call the herald. someone please call wsar.
Not that any of our local media will pick this up but it is a blatant tactic and once again a total disregard for the voters choice!

Anonymous said...

The Herald might run something but they probably wouldn't be able to do it now until after the election, they would probably consider it too prejudicial to bring out or up this late in the race. Dave Sullivan's people should've brought this out but it doesn't shock me that they didn't, Dave seems afraid of bringing stuff like this out even though it is relevant. Linda hasn't filed her finance report yet, that is relevant. She gave $80 to Dave and that is relevant. It shows she thought Dave was doing a good job obviously if she gave him money. So what changed between the time she gave him $80 and decided to run? She suddenly thought he was doing a bad job after thinking he was doing a good job? This seems to back up the theories that she was talked out of running for Probate and into running for State Rep against Dave. Clearly this lady doesn't think for herself, it's all about bowing down to King Bob's wishes. Linda "BLS" Pereira. (BLS stands for Bob's Loyal Servant) Of course I've heard her called Linda "BS" Pereira before but that's a different story.

Anonymous said...

That is why we all need to call into wsar today and let the listeners know about it.

1480wsar@gmail.com

PS Karam is on Sullivans contribution list?!?!

Anonymous said...

Which Karam is on there? Is it James or Bobby or both? These guys have so much money they just give to whomever is in office, just to try to grease the wheels in their favor. They even play a game where usually James will give to Democrats and Bobby to Republicans so no matter who gets in office the Karams win. They certainly didn't support Dave for Mayor but it doesn't shock me that they would try to smooth things over after and throw money at Dave, after all he is still an elected office holder. What shocks me though is that Dave would even accept their money, he should give it back after all the crap they gave him last year during the Mayor's race.

Anonymous said...

I have tried to call into WSAR twice today and as soon as i go to say why I am voting for Dave Sullivan i get cut off...There is no democracy in Fall River!

Anonymous said...

5/22/2008 Karam, Robert
456 Rock Street Fall River, MA 02720 President
Karam Financial Group Sullivan, David B. $500.00

Anonymous said...

Don't say you are voting for sullivan say you are undecided then drop the bomb!! That is the only way Barry will let you stay on the air!

Anonymous said...

The theory about Correia making Sullivan spend money to prevent him using it for mayor could backfire on him. By running a race, especially if he wins by a wide margin, gets his name out even more, since he is forced to campaign and meet more people than he would have otherwise. Usually, before people run for higher office (such as Hillary Clinton, Bill Weld and John Kerry), they want a prior race that had them trouncing a weak opponent. Time will tell if this is the case.

Anonymous said...

try wsar now barry is off the air.

Anonymous said...

Well if there is any common sense left in Fall River then Linda should not only lose to Dave Sullivan but she should also lose by a large margin. She should not only lose the State Rep race but hopefully she will lose the race next year for City Council. She shouldn't even be on the City Council, I don't know why anyone would contemplate sending her to Boston. With her history of telling lies and racist jokes I am sure she would make a great impression up at the State House!

To anonymous: 456 Rock Street is the Carr-Osborne house/estate directly across the street from the Fall River Historical Society. Federico Santi & John Gacher purchased it in 1977 for a mere $25,000 from the Catholic Church and then sold it to Karam. Sadly, and historically criminal, Karam Financial Services partitioned it all off from a glorious single family residence into a mishmosh of office spaces. Makes me sick. I'll be doing a blog piece about it.

For some views of what it looked like, check this out.
http://www.drawrm.com/co.htm

So, where the hell was the Preservation Society back then? Huh?

I did a little Google search and was amazed at the amount of properties and developments in Fall River are owned by or attributed to the Karams.

Anonymous said...

I don't even know if there was a Preservation Society back then but if there was it certainly didn't have the membership that it does today. The Preservation Society as it exists today is fairly active, as for the past I don't know if they existed or who the members were but Fall River has had a Historical Commission for a number of years which is different than the Preservation Society. The Preservation Society is a non-profit open to all who are interested in membership. The Historical Commission is appointed by the Mayor with approval by the City Council and historically has only been as active or inactive as the Mayor motivates them to be and we haven't had many mayors over the years that have been interested in historic preservation or the arts for that matter.

Anonymous said...

As far as the Karam situation don't be shocked by it, they made a fortune and Bobby Karam in particular during the years when Carlton Viveiros was Mayor. They maintained a decent relationship with John Mitchell and an on again and off again, hot and cold love affair with Ed Lambert. Now that Bob Correia is in office it is going to be just like the old days for them when Carlton Viveiros was in office, time for them to reassert their influence and make tons of money.

From Plunkitt of Tammany Hall or Karam of Bob Correia...

"There's an honest graft, and I'm an example of how it works. I might sum up the whole thing by sayin': "I seen my opportunities and I took 'em."
Just let me explain by examples. My party's in power in the city, and it's goin' to undertake a lot of public improvements. Well, I'm tipped off, say, that they're going to lay out a new park at a certain place.
I see my opportunity and I take it. I go to that place and I buy up all the land I can in the neighborhood. Then the board of this or that makes its plan public, and there is a rush to get my land, which nobody cared particular for before.
Ain't it perfectly honest to charge a good price and make a profit on my investment and foresight? Of course, it is. Well, that's honest graft."

Anon 11:30am,

o'Neil was a supporter of Whitty. He switched to Bob after the primary. To call him a "top deputy" is a total fabrication.

Anonymous said...

Yeah O'Neil wasn't a top deputy of Bob Correia except for that photo on the front page of the Herald News with Correia and O'Neil eating at the Clipper Restaurant that identified him as a top deputy in Correia's campaign. Let's not let the facts get in the way when instead we can call the people that present the facts names like losers. You know who the real losers are? The people that call other people losers because they've got nothing else to offer in the way of facts, namecalling is about all they have to contribute to the conversation. I'm also judging by the caps and long run-on sentences that you are either Mike Herren or one of his supporters. You can always tell a Karam or Herren supporter, they have issues with writing and spelling. Should've spent more time in school boys and girls. I'm not envious, hateful or jealous, I actually pity you and the Karams, I wonder how any of you can sleep at night knowing the things that you've done.

Anonymous said...

Isn't typing in CAPS the same as YELLING?? No valid points, Yep it's one of those bullys!

Anonymous said...

O'Neil was a supporter of Whitty. The guy had bumper stickers on his car for Whitty. So, saying he was a top deputy to Bob is dead wrong. He switched once Whitty lost....as did the entire Whitty organization.

Anonymous said...

Then I guess after he switched he became a top deputy for Correia. Don't get mad at people for pointing out the facts, we weren't the ones that ran a front page photo of O'Neil and Correia eating together at the Clipper which identified him as one of Correia's top deputies. If it wasn't true then you should've asked for a correction at that time. The fact remains Correia wanted Pereira out of O'Neil's way and was able to get an opponent for Sullivan which he also wanted.

Anonymous said...

Pereira would've kicked O'Neil's ass in Fall River in the probate race. Instead she may be suffering a loss to Sullivan.

Anonymous said...

This blog is turning into a joke. The majority of the info is wrong and the content is indeed jealous and hateful. Why the obsessing over the Karams and Mike Herren.Get over it and get over yourselfs....move on already

Anonymous said...

This is a discussion board, hence, the varied opinions here. Maybe you should consider moving on if you don't have any information to provide on any of the subjects here.

Anonymous said...

That's right nothing to do with you......move along.

Anonymous said...

The majority of the info on this blog is wrong according to whom? According to you? Maybe the majority of the info is correct but you just don't like it because the facts don't agree with your opinion. You need to get over it and move on already. This blog isn't a joke but the people who call it a joke are a joke, you are just mad because you can't censor it or are you going to whine and complain until another blog gets closed to comments? Is that the strategy?

Just a reminder this blog was about who you want representing you. I didn't want Bob Correia and Bob Karam's handpicked team of Linda Pereira and John O'Neil representing me and guess what? They lost! Yay! There is some justice in the world after all. Now if someone can bounce Bob Correia and his running mate Bob Karam off the 6th floor within the next say 2-4 years we will be able to give the city back to the people. The sooner the better!

Anonymous said...

Give the city back to people like you.. thats a joke right!! Its easy to sit on the sidelines and talk about whats wrong, make up crazy allegations, scare people..its much different to lead and be exposed to the criticism. Its too bad that this site has been overun by radical fringe who never have the courage to lead but are always ready to criticize.Long live the Karams and WSAR.

Anonymous said...

John O'Neil may have lost the county but he took Fall River by over 3500 votes. DeRossi was a New Bedford girl and she won the communities in the Greater New Bedford area. Good Job John! You should have won!

Anonymous said...

And John would have won if more than 20% of the voters had gone out and voted. Perfect example of the problem with all of us, we don't like certain politicians but we do nothing about it. Well let the real Shake-Up begin and get the majority 6 out.

Anonymous said...

I voted for John Oneil because I thought he was the right candidate for the probate. However, I know for a fact the correia allegations are true so don't get too vocal about allegations and scare tactics.

It Said said...

"Long live the Karams and WSAR".

Unitl somebody comes along with the right price and buys both properties..the land the stations occupy is worth far more than the stations themselves..and from I'm told, both are bleeding red ink at an alarming rate..

Anonymous said...

"And John would have won if more than 20% of the voters had gone out and voted."

Exactly, he must be disappointed that the Mayor couldn't turn out 3,000 more troops for him in Fall River.

"Perfect example of the problem with all of us, we don't like certain politicians but we do nothing about it."

Exactly, I don't like certain politicians such as Bob Correia which is one of the reasons that I didn't vote for O'Neil, his association with Mayor Correia led me to question his judgement or lack thereof. I don't like certain politicians but you can't say that I did nothing about it, I did do something about it, I didn't vote for Linda Pereira or John O'Neil.

Anonymous said...

Long live the Karams and WSAR? That's a joke right, lol? I've never heard anyone cheer for censorship quite so loudly unless of course you count the time that I watched that Community Party rally in China on the tv news.

Anonymous said...

Anon,11:14 AM, September 17, 2008

Agreed, I did not vote for pereira but did go ahead and vote for oneil even though I was concerned about this correia connection. I would have preferred he stay away from that affiliation.

When Radio Keri speaks I hope that she will include what her part was in the slanted coverage of the Mayor's campaign. There are those who know and they might decide to break their silence. There is a paper trail that can be followed.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, get in the long line. Herren has ripped off half the city with his scams, nothin new.

Anonymous said...

Not sure what the paper trail means? I would guess Keri was given some "marching" orders by karam, it was pretty obvious how she toned it down.

Anonymous said...

Yeah she did what she had to do to get a paycheck. Now all of a sudden she is a Karam basher. She toned down her critism of Bob C during the election while she promoted her BFF Eric Poulin. She turned on everyone else like Kilby and Whitty. She gives no elected official credit for their service. I'm glad she is gone and hope we don't have to hear from her again.

Anonymous said...

Anon 8:37

What I meant by my post was WSAR/KARAM forced her to tone it down on their friend Bob C and turn on everyone else. It is
obvious they decide which way they
are going to slant the story and don't you dare call in to a talk show to give an opposing point of view or you will be demoralized on the air, Very similiar to a communist country.

Anonymous said...

Keri and Barry were both pretty kind to Poulin in the beginning, I recall both having him on their shows a number of times. The only one that I remember not being nice to him from the start was Mike Moran. Maybe Keri and Bary liked him because he actually had some ideas and no one else did until months after he put out a platform? I know, I know, crazy that this might be the answer instead of some stupid conspiracy theory, of course there had to be another reason, like maybe he got Barry pregnant too.

The bottom line is Keri soon said virtually nothing about Poulin and Barry started attacking him. Seemed like all of a sudden it became Bob Correia radio, all Bob Correia all of the time, slanted news stories about how great he was and Barry singing his praises. Either there was a sudden change of heart among the talk show hosts about who they liked in the race or there is more to the story that we aren't hearing.

Anonymous said...

ok guys, now what? Mr Karam and Mr Mayor got their guy, Nick Fischer, back in to his post for another few years. Guess what, perfect timing, NOW we find out we are at least 2.6, possible 5.2 million dollars short in the school budget, and more layoffs?? How can the people of FR stand to see these mucky-mucks with their huge salaries raping the children of this community? Do people know that we have elementary classrooms as high as 33 students? The mayor stated last spring during the 10 school committee budget meetings they had, that the budget cuts would come from administration and leadership team if the budget was incorrect. I am dying to see who is laid off now. WHY do the people of this city allow this to happen? Fall River will always be downtrodden if its schools continue to decline and believe me, with 30 5-year-olds in a Kindergarten class, you don't get much attention. GO visit!!

Anonymous said...

I wonder how much of Mr. Karam's Kool Aid the talking heads across the river will have to drink in order to make Nick Fischer blameless for this budget screw up? Herren used to be amusing. Now he just another of Karam's shills like Barry Richard.

Anonymous said...

Why do yo think the GET IT DONE mayor was in such a hurry to get his contract done?!?!?!?!?!?!

Anonymous said...

Because just like the Police Chief's contract you have to notify the Supt. by a certain date whether or not you intend to negotiate a new contract with him. Nice try!

Anonymous said...

Dear Nice Try Insider;

INTEND TO NEGOTIATE THE CONTRACT??
So it is not a done deal insider???

Anonymous said...

I to hope that it is just an intention to start the process with Nick Fisher and the more that comes out about the budget class size etc the lower the chace of a renewal.
I hope the people of Fall River love their kids enough to get rid of this man.

Anonymous said...

Herren has been a bully since he was a teenager!!He must have some
serious info on the Karams..That is
the only explanation for having this "punch drunk sounding" bully
on the airways. Anyone driving through the area and hearing his
program must think they are back in
hillbilly country. Only on WSAR would a boozing, drugging bully be
allowed on the radio.

I think the info on the School Department shortfall calls for the start of a new blog, especially since so many people seem to want to talk about it.

I believe the vote to notify Dr. Fischer that the School Committee was interested in renegotiating with him was 4-3. It's interesting that the info on the budget shortfall came out after the vote and not before. I wonder if the vote would have gone a different way if the info came out before. This type of budget mismanagement led to previous superintendents like Neely being tarred and feathered and ridden out of town.

Anonymous said...

I'm listening to the radio right now and one would think that Mike Herren would be all over this school dept snafu. Instead we are talking about the arts, marijuana, etc. Is he under pressure to be sweet to Dr Fischer due to the fact that the Karams support him? Remember when Mike referred to the superintendent as a "lying jerk"? (An accurate characterization, I might add) He was suspended for that I think. He should be outraged, as we all should be at this point.

Anonymous said...

Herren has chosen to ignore the school dept deficit, he opened his show by commenting on what a slow news day it was. He has instead chosen the topic of the decrim. of marijuana, which he is giving a resounding thumbs up. This guy is the poster boy of what may heppen when you start smoking a little weed after school. You may end up a middle aged fool arrested in a drug motel with two hookers in Somerset.

Lefty said...

Well this has gotten a little off topic!

I do find some of this amusing. I really don't mind the conspiracy theories, I may even buy into some of them, but let's keep it to accusations that we can actually back up with some sort of sharable facts.

There is a difference between fact and opinion.

I'll admit the latest news from the school department is infuriating and I have had a 'school post' in the works now for a few days, but just haven't had time to put it all together. Now the latest has me rethinking my opinions.

I didn't hear the afternoon show today, but I did hear some of Barry's and he certainly wasn't ducking the school issue.

Anonymous said...

Barry might not duck it and will talk about it but will the talk be all spin or something of substance? Will he criticize Dr. Fischer and/or the Mayor at all for this financial mishap and/or ask the tough question as to whether or not this was known before or after the issue with Dr. Fischer's contract. I'm sure they will say they only found out about it recently but I would like to hear their denial and version of the facts.

Anonymous said...

Lefty, we would really appreciate a school post, hope you find the time to work on that. It is critical to Fall River. It is easy to forget with all the politicizing about schools, and budgets, but you /we need to know what our kids are actually getting...

BLINK read the book it shows how one small idea can take off and spread like wildfire. People are outraged and on the city side the city coundilor shake up has already started. We need people to
get out and vote against these inept councilors and school commitee persons. Yes there is a fear of retaliation city wide but you are the only one in the voting booth. No need to make yourself known just vote . On the school committee side I'm sure FR *PT@aol.com will keep your information confidential or you could send anonymous emails. FRPT should also start a blog and have a phone # people can contact them at.
