Since you do get so much traffic, I'm wondering what people know about Morton Middle School closing next year. I know it was proposed last year at the 11th hour as a cost saving measure, but the Morton community rallied and the School Committee voted to keep it open this year. But, I'm hearing that there is a good chance it will close at the end of this year. It seems more likely especially since there is actually a building to put them in next year with the opening of the new Kuss. If that is the case, why don't they announce it now, actually make it part of a plan and give parents an opportunity to make decisions regarding their kids' education? They have done this (last minute school closings) with various schools over the past 3 years. Of course some school closings were planned, but some were not, and were simply cost saving measures. This type of tactic is unfair to the students, and to the parents who trust the the FRPS with their children. Are last minute knee-jerk reactions in the best interest of the students? Of course not, but they are becoming commonplace. The administration and school committee expect the public to develop a tolerance for this type of management, hoping we become immune, and simply EXPECT nothing. They want us to feel lucky to have what we have, and don't dare advocate for any more!! Look at the MCAS results, this entire district is in restructuring. With the financial MESS they are in this year, come budget time in the Spring I really don't think their discussions will be centered on what to do with the extra money they have in the school department! That "error in transcription" to the tune of several thousands of dollars, that Mr. Sullivan referred to 2 school committee meetings ago will be long forgotten! No, its going to to be "no one wants to make these cuts, but it is necessary..." then all vote "aye"...of course, be re-assured that none of these cuts directly impacts the services students receive! And we are supposed to believe that?! Guess what folks, we bought it this year! And we'll vote them all back in!
Back to Morton, I have heard from several people that Morton will be closed next year. I'm wondering what the others know.

I don't have any inside scoop on Morton's future. My understanding is the plan has been to have Morton move to the existing Kuss building when that school moves to its new facility. However, the new Kuss is a much larger building than the current school. I think it's very likely that you could see Morton close completely.

Anonymous said...

You are right, moving Morton to the existing Kuss was the original plan, when there was still a plan to build a new Morton. There is no longer an active plan to build a new Morton, that plan was scrapped when they spent that money on the the completion of the existing new schools. Are they planning for Fall River to have three middle schools, or continue to have 4 middle schools? The general pulse out there is that it will close, though no formal announcements have been made. If it is not going to close and they plan to build a new Morton, aren't these the types of plans that should be brought up at school meetings, parent meetings, etc? Better yet, perfect opportunity for YET ANOTHER press conference with the rendering of the new school unveiled!!! Gee, no press conference...no new school...
I think people would like to keep the old one even if they don't build a new one.

Anonymous said...

Why don't we knock Morton down and reclaim the park like it was meant to be?

Anonymous said...

I don't see the name Herren anywhere on that list, that's got to be disappointing to the people that keep leaving comments that say love him or hate him Fall River is obsessed with him. Looks like the words battleship cove or keri rodrigues are more responsible for driving traffic to this blog.

There were no real errors in transcription as Mayor Correia pointed out at the last School Committee meeting. That type of error means that instead of 23 you put down 32 or something like that. The Mayor pointed out that Sullivan totally screwed up the budgeting of several schools in terms of utility expenses. Some large schools had tiny utility budgets listed and some small schools had giant figures listed. It made absolutely no sense and the Mayor called out Sullivan on it but he wasn't even there to take it, guess he couldn't be bothered to show up for an important School Committee meeting.

Anonymous said...

It makes more sense to have a middle school in the north end, a middle school in the flint and a middle school in the south end. Why have 2 middle schools, Henry Lord and Kuss in the south end? We probably only need 1 in the south end and closing Henry Lord would be a cost savings. I know the Henry Lord is relatively new so it may seem less palatable to talk about closing it as opposed to Morton but it seems to make more sense. Close it down and sell it off to someone for economic development purposes and to bring money in that we could earmark for education. Plus Henry Lord and Kuss are both chronically underperforming and Talbot and Morton are not. Wouldn't it make sense or look better to have only 1chronically underperforming middle school instead of 2?

Anonymous said...

I do not think the idea of a new Morton is dead, therefor I do not expect Morton to close at the end of the year unless it is to go to old Kuss until the Morton situation is totally resolved.

Anonymous said...

It is likely that Tansey, Watson, and Morton will eventually close... sooner rather than later.

Anonymous said...

Last spring the rationale was that enrollment has dropped at Morton over the past few years. I'm sure that it continued this year, as panicked 5th grade parents sought out alternate schools for their kids last spring when they proposed Morton closing, thereby creating a drop in enrollment for the current 6th grade. It is not just that people don't want their kids to go to other schools, it is the lack of planning. Parents like to prepare their children for their future, drive by a school and say, "that's where you'll go next year..", parents like to re-assure their kids, not spin them around in circles and send them on their way!!
Where is the plan, if enrollment is so low we don't need the school, (as was stated last spring by the Superintendent), and the kids can be "housed" elsewhere, then why would there be plans to build a new school?? What is the PLAN? Doesn't anyone plan in this town?

I thought his show today was totally insane with some scary personal attacks. Like it or not, Mr. Viveros can do what he wants with the "art" he chooses to display. I actually drove by there and didn't find it offensive. Not sure why Michael got sooo crazy mad about it.

A couple of things here...

Mention Morton and you can certainly get some comments. I really don't want to derail this post further with Morton talk, but I will do some Citizen Journalism and try to find out more about what's going on and cover it in another post.

I guess you can also say mention Mike Herren and you'll get some comments too. I think it's fair to say that Herren brings some traffic to this and other blogs. How much? Well I don't know.

I can only tell you that he wasn't one of the top 25 keywords from search engines. So the vast majority of people are not finding this blog by Googling "Mike Herren". I can also tell you that those 25 words were the majority of search engine traffic.

Search engine visits accounted for 27% of all blog visits for the month of September. The majority of visits came here either directly (12%), were referred here by Fall River Blog (27%), or were referred here from other local blogs (25%).

Roger Williams said...

I came here looking for "Keri Rodrigues" + "loon", and I wasn't disappointed.

Well ... it's more accurate to say that I wasn't disappointed until I saw the relatively poor results for "chow mein sandwich". Surely Fall River's own culinary horror which has spawned so many imitators around the country can do better than #23.

Anonymous said...

Don't count on Morton closing, especially next year. Next year the Mayor and the School Committee are up for reelection. They will have enough to answer for with the likely rehiring of a clearly incompetent Superintendent of Schools, a budget mess that will probably continue to get worse, and the difficult job of negoiating new contracts with several unions. People will put up with many things, but closing Morton would cause such an uproar that it would lead to the defeat of any and all members of the School Committee who would vote to do so.

Anonymous said...

Why are we blaming the budget mess on Dr. Fischer? Look at the budget and see all the expenses that were added into this year by the Mayor. The school department now pays health insurance, unemployment insurance, retirement, a storm water run off fee. We wonder why the budget is short! Don't blame the superintendent!

Lefty said...

Anon 8:44 - that's a pretty good observation. It's amazing what an election year can do.

Anon 9:58 - I agree. This is pretty much the point I made in the School Daze post.

Anonymous said...

It wasn't the Mayor who added nearly $5 million dollars to the administrative salary account in the last three years. It wasn't the Mayor who overspent the transportation account by over $1 million dollars last year It was the Superintndent who made cuts in staff that directly affected service to students and kept all of his high priced assistants. But it was, however, the Mayor who set a predetermined bottom line for the school budget that is now clearly inadequate. The Superintendent is the school department's CEO. He must take responsibility both good and bad. The Mayor and the members of the School Committee who voted to offer him a new contract who must also bear responsibilty for the Superintendent's incompetence. He's doing the same things that got him fired in Delaware. Shame on them all!

Anonymous said...

They are one in the same, the superintendant overspent and the mayor overspent. Both on top heavy administrative (political pay back jobs) instead of being prudent with OUR money and taking care of the students, teachers, and public safety and services.

Yes it's re-election year don't forget it.

Where are the five million in salaries? What are the positions? You say in the last three years! The position were funded until this year and we were forced to take an amount in a budget that everyone knew was to low to properly fund education. We need to ask where the 91 million in Chapter 70 money went and how much of the city tax dollars are going to fund education. I think the answer will surprise you.

We miss you Keri! When are you going to update your blog? I had WSAR on today for the first time since you left and after about 10 minutes of the Hurricane show I had to shut if off. I feel bad for him, he was obviously promoted beyond his own abilities. It's amazing what passes for talk radio these days in Fall River. The debate is certainly a lot less intelligent and primarily because the competence of your replacement who leads the debate is suspect when it comes to anything other then sports.

The contributor's that stop by to tell us how "hot" mike herren is seem to only do so after the bars have dumped their last drunken patron's on the sidewalk. Maybe that is why Barret's allows him to do the show from their place of business. I can think of no other reason why a local business would want to affiliate themselves with such a person. And I wonder if local politicians have given any thought to how they are perceived when they grant him an interview. When it was made public that Linda Pereira asked him for support it made her look even more foolish.

Anonymous said...

Lefty,

You should start charging Herren ad fees for his daily mistype. Then you can give a percentage to Keri for all the traffic she generates:)

Anonymous said...

I don't listen to WSAR anymore and I'm curious as to how many others have either tuned out or can only turn it on for 5-10 minutes before they quickly turn it off.

Keri, like her or hate her was intelligent and brought the station credibility that it didn't have before because she was intelligent and could form complete sentences and was able to land interviews with prestigious people. The fact that WSAR can still land some of these interviews is probably because of the work that she did while she was there. Only time will tell if the Senators and Congressmen and educational leaders will continue to call in if they realize that soemone barely able to construct sentences awaits them on the other end of the phone. I would think they would realize at some point that if you associate yourselves with morons that you might be labeled as a moron and your own credibility will suffer.

The station WSAR can no longer be viewed as a credible source for news particularly after the curtain has been pulled back and it has been established as all but certain that talk show hosts are instructed as to what to say and who to bash or not to bash by the management above them.

For better or for worse the Herald News is the only major media outlet left to serve Fall River. We lost our local cable news channel through Comcast's budget cutting a few years back and now we've lost our local radio station due to poor management and feeble-minded talk show hosts.

Who are you addressing your comment to? Are you speaking to Keri, people who have stopped listening to WSAR or the people who do not want an LNG terminal at Weavers Cove? Are you stating that WSAR is pro LNG or just anti Keri? If WSAR is just fine why come here and try to convince us of it?

Anonymous said...

I'm addressing the the "former" listeners who think Keri is the be all and end all. It seemed that all but a few people were not sufficiently anti-LNG for her liking. She pretty much chased everyone else and their supporters away. Why are you people so afraid to listen to opposing points of view? Are you afraid that you might find out that your idol was not always telling you the truth?

Anonymous said...

Maybe we should back up and remember what started all the unfavorable feedback about WSAR. I do not feel that Keri is the "the end all to be all". I did not listen to her every day. When I did tune in she would make statements and voice opinions which did not always align with my own. However she did come to work fully prepared to present her viewpoint and did so with intelligence and the empirical data to back it up. Then she stops blogging, declines a job offer with the DA and leaves town with no forwarding address. Fast forward to the MCAD complaint. Now I am a thirtysomthing that grew up here and I am ashamed at how this woman was allowed to be treated at our hometown radio station. Anyone who went to school with, attended a party where he was present, been at a local bar where he was a patron, been the unfortunate soul seated next him at a restaurant, or sporting event where his ego has not been sufficiently stroked knows exactly what I am talking about. Mike Herren, the local sociopath is given a pass when abusing women in the workplace and then rewarded. If the Karams want to continue to employ Herren they can. It is their station.

Anonymous said...

Thank you, you have made your point. Let's move on from this topic it only feed into "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?"

There are much more important things to discuss here.

And I decided to tell the truth.

To the character who was asking about Fast Eddie, he's definitely leaving. This is his last week at WSAR and...well...why do think he's leaving? Herren has made everybody who works at that place miserable and for all we know, Eddie's gone home and found HIS tires slashed or HIS family threatened. Eddie's already been dragged through very public mud when Keri decided to air his letter to the Herald...and if you know Herren, you know he doesn't appreciate "getting disrespected."

I'm sure Herren's dished out some personal justice against the poor guy, and now WSAR loses one really excellent cog in it's machine. It's only a matter of time before the rest of the station follows suit, and the Karam boys are left with their daughter, Herren, and his barely intelligable chronies ruling the airwaves.

Anonymous said...

That's too bad, will he be able to go to providence or the likes or will he have to move out of FR?

If it is true that Fast Eddie is leaving then I commend him and Keri for getting off the Titanic before it is too late.

To put it in terms that the Karam/Herren crowd can understand, WSAR is WCW, the ill-fated wrestling organization that sunk like the Titanic. WCW was always nothing until the arrival of the NWO/Keri which sparked great interest but post NWO/Keri the station is worse off than it was pre NWO/Keri and will sink like the ship Titanic. I like to use wrestling/NASCAR analogies when speaking to the Karam and especially the Herren crowd because I think if you want a redneck to understand something then you have to speak in their language.

Anonymous said...

The FR School system will not be fixed in the lifetime of Eddie Garcia's kids. Get out of town before it's too late for the next generation. That goes for everyone else in these god forsaken schools too. This too is the Titanic.

Anonymous said...

Jeez, lots of gloom and doom. Some is warranted but a downer nonetheless. Sorry to hear about Eddie Garcia. Not sure what WASR is thinking, smart guy, great production skills, throw him under the bus in favor of Herren? But I guess the Karam's can do whatever they want, it is their station.

I'll go into more detail Thursday-ish, but......I'll be hitting VT just in time for the best of the fall foilage. My kids'll go to a better school, and I'll be, like, playing MUSIC on the air again.
What a concept.

Lefty said...

Is it just me or has this gone way off topic?

People really need to stop beating up Mike Herren. People also need to stop defending him. Mike is what he is. As radio host he has his flaws, but he also has his strengths. I personally have enjoyed listening to him, sometimes I agree, often I don't. If you people dislike him as a host, turn the channel. If the ratings are bad, he'll be replaced.

I get that there are people who after reading all the stuff about Keri leaving feel Mike should be fired. All I can say to that is, it is my understanding that there will an investigation. If the investigation validates what Keri says then I doubt Mike will have a future with the station. I know people will disagree with what I say but let's wait and see what happens.

I feel bad that circumstances were such that Keri felt the need to leave her job and the area. I like her, liked her show and feel she was an asset to the station. For her sake I'm glad she's moved on to something better.

As I type this I see Eddie Garcia has left a comment. I feel bad for Eddie because no matter what he says people are going to believe what they want to. I've talked to Eddie a little bit here and there. He's been bluntly honest with me in the past. Here's the inside scoop: Eddie just wants to give his family a better life. He's not the first to leave Fall River to achieve that. I wish him much success.

Categorically: Nothing like that has ever happened to me. Far from it. For God's sake, I was out drinking with him last Monday night at Barrett's.

I'm sure Herren's dished out some personal justice against the poor guy,

And you're sure of that how? Again, nothing like that has happened. At all. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

and now WSAR loses one really excellent cog in it's machine.

That, however, I appreciate very much.
I'll let you in on "the psychology of Eddie": ("Being Eddie Garcia", kinda like "Being John Malkovich")
I find that I can't handle the politically charged environment of talk radio. I take it too personally.
I'm a stone cold political junkie, but after doing this for a living for a while, I need my work to be a break from it. If you got to know the guy I've become since I started working here, I can't promise you you'd like him. He is too often angry, hostile, and confrontational. I've always taken my work home. With this situation, that is a Very Bad Thing.
Between that and Fall River not being somewhere I want to raise my boys, the solution was obvious.
And at the same time, I achieved a goal I set for myself in 2005 when I was transferred to Virginia from Vermont: get back to the Green Mountain State.
So I've taken a job doing mornings at a classic hits station in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. And I can start being me again, playing good music, being every listener's buddy, and hopefully a better husband and daddy than I've been this past year. The family and I are very excited and happy to be going back to Vermont.
And we're going from living two blocks from Watuppa Heights to a house in the woods with a woodstove. Always wanted one of those.

So don't be telling me about my relationship with Mike Herren, Keri, or anyone else. I will tell YOU about it, when I'm damn good and ready. And not before.
I will speak for myself, thanks very much.

Sorry Fall River wasn't good enough for you Eddie, it would be a better place if it wasn't being run by an egomaniacal power structure such as the folks that own the radio station. As far as the so-called investigation I predict that it will find nothing and was a joke all along. Of course the management's handpicked investigator isn't going to find anything, the idea was to appear that they were looking for something but in the end the report is just gonna say that everything is okay. What a shock! Anyway, best of luck to you Eddie.

My favorite line in Eddie's letter was, "Just because I've been afraid of him a couple three times, doesn't mean I'm afraid of him ALL the time." Sounds like classic battered wife syndrome, he loves me, he is my friend, just because he scares me or beats me sometimes doesn't mean it happens all the time. Yeah that situation sounded very healthy alright, go ahead and get out of town dude.

Thanks for your nightly run on sentence. What will become of you when you do lose the radio show? Too many flies on you dude!

You really do have to wonder if this guy is mentally ill or somthing if he really belivies he is "The Hurricane". I thought it was just a character like a wrestler and he talks so arrogant cause thats part of the radio job. Does this guy really think his is famous? No offense but it's just a little radio station you cant pick up hardly anywhere.

Really all caps guy? Because the actual blog post proves that you aren't the reason people are reading the blog. A chow mein sandwich invoked more interest than you.

Actually, I'm the one who posted anonymously at 9:14, and I never claimed to be Mike Herren.

I said that if it wasn't for me, none of you would be reading this blog. Which is true enough since I'm the guy who created the blog.

Really, I did it to prove a point, that anyone can press the caps lock and type something that sounds what we think a 'Mike Herren' comment would sound like.

This has just gotten silly. Yes, we all know Mike has had his issues, scrapes and demons. Something that to his credit he's been very candid about on the radio. What's the point of dragging all this stuff up again and again and again? What's the point of name calling?

He calls himself the Hurricane, it hardly seems right for someone who calls himself Lefty to be critical on that. Is he mentally ill? How much of 'The Hurricane' is radio persona?

Last night, Herren used the blog chat feature to talk to me. He wanted to say that some of the comments were way off base. He wasn't particularly upset about it (and no he did not type IN CAPS), but he was bothered that it had upset his cousin. We went back and forth about what people thought of him and he really was nonplussed by it, even cracking a few jokes. If he has an ego, it was in check last night.

Really, I don't expect to change any opinions, nor am I really defending him here. If you have issues with him that's fine but let's keep off the blog unless it's related to the topic at hand. Even then let's keep it intelligent and to the point.

When Eddie Garcia says he's moving away to get back to playing music and doing politics as his hobby and not his job. When he says it's a chance to move back to a place he WANTS to move back to, and people who don't even know him basically call him a liar, it's time to move on.
