WSAR Bombshell

Keri Rodrigues left WSAR and the Fall River area due to intimidation and harassment by a fellow WSAR co-worker reports today's Herald News.

Rodrigues has stated that abusive incidents with Mike Herren date back to November of 2005. Herren refutes accusations and has offered to take a lie detector test.

There are two sides to every story and it will be interesting to see how the Karams respond to this.

Many people knew this was going on for a long time. I'm just glad Keri had the courage to tell the truth.

Two sides Lefty? Do you honestly believe she is lying in this situation? Mike has been arrested five times for this same type of stuff.

Your article states "Keri Rodrigues left...the Fall River area due to intimidation and harassment by a fellow WSAR co-worker..".

The article stated she left the area due to her tires being slashed and threatening communications. It made no connection nor did Keri state that it was a WSAR co-worker.

For you to state that she left the area due to a fellow WSAR co-worker is to assume the co-workder slashed her tires and left threatening communications.

Her statement: “I can’t attribute any of that to any one person"

Anonymous said...

The article also states that the verbal and physical intimidation did not stop after she left.

It seems to me that Keri is on emotional spin cycle and hence the flight from Fall River. None of us know the real truth in what happened at WSAR or the circumstances leading to her decision to abandon what would have been another very good job in the D.A.'s office, if it *were* her decision. I consider Keri a friend of mine and my not knowing where she is or being able to reach her is troublesome to me. I sincerely hope she and Michael are doing well and that she finds some peace and stability. She's a tough cookie, capable and smart. She knows how to network and use resources. Perhaps getting away from Fall River, whether in the long term or short term, will turn out to be a good decision and put her on yet another path of career success.

You're right, Faye. I think that leaving was probably the best thing for both Keri and her son. This may lead her down an even more fabulous career path, and it would definitely be safer - especially since she said that someone has been slashing her tires. Yikes! What if she was driving and didn't notice the slice? Then she got in an accident - with her KID in the car?! That would have been a nightmare.

I don't know if Mike Herren was the slasher, but whoever it was should be ashamed. I thought bully-type stuff ended in high school, but now that I'm older, I realize that it NEVER ends. How unfortunate.

It's funny that the article mentioned her and her son, but doesn't mention the son's father. Did he go with her or was there a breakup?

As a friend of Keri's, I'm concerned for her safety, and pretty embarrassed by the behavior of my SouthCoast neighbors, no matter who all is responsible for what she's going through.

Phillomena said...

Like i posted in my own blog lets see the proof that her tires were slashed, lets see the notes that were left on her window.
oh wait she's hiding in fear of her life...give me a break

Anonymous said...

Phillomena,

It's disingenuous to bash Keri on your blog and on the Herald News comments without revealing that you are Herren's friend and have even appeared on his show.

Second, I don't see why you feel entitled to see the slashed tires and threatening notes.

Third, I don't understand why you feel entitled to make the determinations about Keri's safety. I think Keri is in the best position of making those decisions.

Fourth, for someone who wrote a blog post about compassion, you seem to be lacking compassion right now.

Finally, it's too bad that the opinions on the HN site are turning into a popularity contest which favors the athlete who won a state championship 20 years ago, whose daddy was a State Rep., and who has drinking buddies in every tavern in the city.

Anonymous said...

Phillomena-
I am sure Keri would rather provide that evidence to the police rather than to you, a friend of Herren's.

Phillomena said...

in response:
I am not Herren's friend, and have called and commented on his show. I did not think that makes me his friend.

Second, i did not bash Kerri on my blog or anywhere else.

I think that Kerri (with what i know about her, from meeting her, and what was in the paper) needs to make a response to the allegations that she is spewing.
it seems to me she is blaming everyone else for her problems and not taking any blame.

For your information i have only been living here a short time, less than 2 years, and quite interested on how the whole Herren family still gets everyone going.

Get you facts stright. As far as the compassion goes i have a ton, but take resposiblity when you need to. Thank you

Anonymous said...

Phillomena,

Haven't you also appeared on Herren's radio show?

"It seems to me she is blaming everyone else for her problems and not taking any blame."

So Keri should blame herself for her tires getting slashed and having threatening notes left behind?

I have yet to see your "ton of compassion" in this situation.

Phillomena said...

i have never appeared on Herren's radio show. You have me mixed up with someone else. As i said before I have called in to give my two cents.
No it is not kerri's fault that her tires were slashed, or notes were left etc.
Simply, she needs to take resposibility for her own life. If leaving Fall River is what needed to be done, then good for her.if she is knee deep in crap because her former bosses are politicaly connected then she should go and not look back.

Check this out. It's on The Herald News site:

Fall River — A day after former WSAR radio personality Keri Rodrigues claimed that years of physical and verbal intimidation suffered at the hands of a radio talk show host Michael Herren compelled her to decline a post with the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, station co-owner James Karam painted a different picture of the events leading to Rodrigues’ departure.
“There were no allegations at any point until a week or two ago,” Karam said.
Rodrigues had intended to begin work with the DA on child abuse prevention and senior abuse education and prevention this month, but after failing to report for work Monday, Rodrigues told The Herald News that a hostile work environment at her former radio station had forced her to leave her radio job as well as give up her new profession.
Karam said an internal investigation was immediately launched by an outside consultant, although the results of that investigation, when completed, will be kept private. Karam said Rodrigues claimed only that Herren had said something derogatory about her to someone else in the workplace, not directly to her.
“I only spend one hour per week at the radio station for a board meeting, and I have never heard of any allegations about Herren, and Rodrigues had never come to me with the complaints,” said Karam. “We have specific guidelines that we follow to a ‘T’ at the radio station. I have over 300 employees (in other ventures) and I have never had a complaint. It’s obvious that she has some ax to grind, and her allegations have nothing to do with reality.”
Station co-owner Robert Karam did not respond to a message left at his Fall River office Tuesday, nor did he answer calls placed to his Fall River home Monday evening, although in a voice mail message left for Herald News Editor in Chief Lisa Strattan Tuesday morning, Karam said he lives on Cape Cod during the summer. He declined to leave a phone number for his Cape home.
Refuting allegations made by Rodrigues about a hostile workplace environment and owner disinterest at the station, James Karam said that four to five weeks ago, Rodrigues complained about her finances as she was looking to purchase a car. Karam said he and his brother gave Rodrigues $1,000 as a car downpayment, something he claimed they would not have done if there was a hostile work environment as Rodrigues claims. Karam said she was also given a raise.
“We realized she was a single mother,” Karam said.
Rodrigues countered that after three years at the radio station, repeatedly seeking both a raise and performance evaluations, the Karams gave her the $1,000 as a bonus and a $40-a-week pay hike.
And disputing Rodriques’ claim that the Karams threatened to make things miserable for her at the DA’s office, James Karam said he even wished her well when he received a courtesy call from DA Sam Sutter explaining that he had hired Rodrigues.
“I told him I had no problem with that, and I wished her well. I am happy when an employee has the opportunity to go on to bigger and better things,” Karam said.
DA Spokesman Gregg Miliote said Sutter placed “professional courtesy calls” to both James and Robert Karam after offering the position to Rodrigues. That was the only time the three have discussed Rodrigues, Miliote said.
Karam said that after Rodrigues left the station, she was asked to sign customary paperwork regarding health insurance, was told to pass in her keys within 24 hours and to pick up her possessions. But, Karam said he received word that Rodrigues came into the radio station after hours, a violation of company policy.
“We don’t allow anyone to do that, it’s an illegal entry. She had no right to be in that building,” said Karam.
Rodrigues said she had removed all by two boxes of her belongings during the day and received permission to come back later the same night and get two more boxes and a baby stroller she couldn’t carry on her first trip.
“I brought my mother in to help me lift the boxes,” she said.
Karam also said that after Rodrigues gave birth to her son, she had approached the owners about changing her 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. radio hours to a schedule better suited to raising a child. Rodrigues’ time slot was changed so that she would be going home around 2 p.m., he said.
“We did that to help her out, but I don’t think we would have done that or given her money for the car if she was a disgruntled employee, or if we had a disregard for people in the workplace,” Karam said. “Her allegations are absolutely untrue. I believe she has delusions of grandeur.”
But Rodrigues countered that the Karams had urged her to revamp the morning show and “get rid of Mike Moran.” She said they wanted a female personality and a reduction in payroll dollars.
“I conducted a search for candidates, and in the end Bob Karam suggested I move to the mornings. I complied and set a plan in motion,” said Rodrigues. “My schedule would have been a hell of a lot easier without having to wake an infant up at 3:30 a.m. to take him to day care. I was lucky to find someone willing to take him at 4:30 a.m. — and had to drive to Bristol, R.I., to do so.”
Rodrigues forwarded The Herald News her entire Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination complaint dated Aug. 8. It describes physical and verbal intimidation suffered at the hands of Herren, starting on Nov. 24, 2005, up until July 31 of this year and the hostility she said she faced from owner Robert Karam after discussing those complaints with him. MCAD spokeswoman Barbara Green said she was unable to confirm receiving Rodrigues’ complaint until MCAD discusses the complaint with both sides.
“My research indicates that the respondent has not yet been properly served, so there isn’t anything in our system that can be released to you,” Green said.
Former mayoral candidate Eric Poulin contacted The Herald News Tuesday, however, to report that he was present when Rodrigues turned in her keys, and he witnessed Robert Karam’s treatment of Rodrigues, who had asked Poulin to accompany her because she feared an altercation.
“Within minutes of her entering the building, Bobby Karam arrived and immediately began speaking to her in a manner in which no one should speak to another person, let alone a woman. If I hadn’t been there to witness it, I might not have believed how bad things are down there,” Poulin said in an e-mail. “The first few sentences out of his mouth were telling her to ‘shut her lip,’ and how he ‘didn’t want none of her lip.’ At any rate, when Keri stood up for herself with regard to those comments, she was asked by Bobby to leave the building. I still can’t believe anyone would treat an employee that way whether they be former or current.”
Also Tuesday, Rodrigues forwarded an e-mail complaint, dated July 31, from Herren’s on-air partner Eddie Garcia, who has not been on the air recently. In in e-mail, Garcia complained about Herren “using his unchallenged authority within the radio station to bully me.”
“His bullying is distressing to me and making my work environment unbearably hostile,” Garcia wrote in the letter to WSAR General Manager Doug Tweedy. “This is unacceptable to me. He berates and belittles me on the air. Much worse though, he harasses and physically intimidates me off the air, on company property both during and after working hours and has done this on more than one occasion.”
Like Rodrigues, Garcia wrote that he has made multiple requests for management to intervene to stop what he referred to as bullying behavior by Herren, and the complaints have either been ignored or WSAR has chosen not to address that matter seriously.
“I have the right to expect to be free from harassment, threats and physical intimidation in the workplace,” Garcia wrote in the final few paragraphs of the e-mail, “and it is not too much to expect that WSAR take the minimum steps needed to ensure that the work environment for all of us is free from the bullying that is occurring now.”
Contacted by e-mail, Garcia would only say that he is still employed at WSAR but would not comment on any complaint or anything else dealing with the station. Tweedy did not return a call Tuesday requesting comment.
Rodrigues said James Karam was always the “gentleman of the two brothers” and that she still has a lot of respect for him. But she speculated that Robert Karam was not sharing information with his brother, including her numerous complaints.
“If I had an agenda or were out for money, I would have filed a lawsuit, but instead I filed a complaint with MCAD. It’s not my intention to sue anyone,” said Rodrigues. “I filed an MCAD complaint so that the commonwealth can come in and stop these conditions.”

I've known Eric Poulin since high school, and he never seemed like the type to fabricate a story. That doesn't mean I'm choosing sides, it just means that I really don't expect Eric - a former mayoral candidate - to get involved in drama unless he had a valid reason to.

Oh, so now if Keri decided that she was not safe and had to leave it's "good for her" when before it was "give me a break."

On the HN site you wrote (unless there's another Phillomena) "Keri is not innocent." What did Keri do wrong here? She reported abuse to her employers and MCAD. Suffered the abuse for years and left when she had enough, only to receive additional threats.

You also wrote that "Keri got caught in places she was not allowed to be." Would you care to elaborate on that?

I find it interesting that this article in the Herald News today attracted so many comments from names that have never commented on an HN article before. Can you explain that phenomenon Phillomena?

Great observation anonymous (8:37)

I was thinking the same thing about the flood of new monikers on the Herald News site. I also am getting a kick out of the poor, poor spelling associated with these new names/Herren fans.

Holy crap. The game changes when you've got witnesses. Keri's not stupid. Anyone listening to her show would know that she wouldn't do anything like this unless she had them dead-to-rights. And she does.

My favorite part is the cowering Bob Karam who refuses to say anything while vacationing on Cape Cod, when he is apparently at the center of the story. Let Jimmy handle the dirty work. The Karams don't appear to have any evidence backing up their version of events while this girl has WITNESSES and DOCUMENTATION.

You go girl.

Phillomena,

If I was a friend of Michael Herren, I would be ashamed to admit it as well.

By the way, I'd like to read your thoughts on the new article which quotes an email from Fast Eddie to WSAR management concerning Herren's bullying tactics. Perhaps Fast Eddie is just blaming everyone else too and not taking any responsibility for his own actions either.

Fast Eddie's complaints offer the same complaints Keri made. Let's see how the Herrenites try to discredit Fast Eddie.

Anonymous said...

Bob Karam has been getting away with trying to be a bully for years and years, ever since he was a kid. He's been pulling the wool over everyone's eyes including his own brother for years too, it depends what face he wants to put on that day. I'm glad someone is finally calling him out. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will be the beginning of the end for his crooked kingdom but I highly doubt it, he has too much money and too much influence and friends in high places. He will fight back at some point either publicly or perhaps already is or will be fighting behind the scenes. He will attempt to discredit Keri and anyone else that might back up her position and in the end with all his money and power it just might stick, but I sure hope it doesn't.

Phillomena said...

i will be happy to explain any phenomenon that you would like me to. I may not be right, but i will be more than happy to give you my opinion.

This story strikes a cord in me, i don't know why. But maybe because everyone is willing to hang Herren out to dry. I personally do not think that it is fair. But, that's not for me to decide. However, what the HN did not say is that Kerri was going into the radio station late at night consistantly after she left her postion. NOT TO GET BOXES. When Eric was there and Karem got lippy was because she got caught. Believe me or not I just telling you what what I know.

Second, I find it funny that all of a sudden Fast Eddie is being brought into it. I really did not hear Herren ever belittle himon the air, but I also did not listen everyday. What I do know is that they talked a lot about going places and having fun when they talked about places they went. THey even talked about how Eddie's children even slpet over Herren's house. If Herren was that bad to him why would he have a personal relationship with him outside of work.
I want to make it clear to everyone that reads this, my other comments, and/or my blog.....I am not taking anyone's side here. I am not here to have a pissing contest with anyone, or try to berate or hurt anyones feelings. So, if you come at me, no i more than likely will not have much compassion for you.
But i will give you all my opinion and what i know, i am willing to share.

The fast eddie/hurricane show was really awkward to listen to many days because of Herren's treatment of Eddie. I didn't particularly enjoy eddie but listening to Herren degrade him on air made me feel like I was a nosey eavesopper listening in on a domestic dispute.

Anonymous said...

Phillomena,

The fact that Keri went into the station after hours was not a well-known fact until it was printed in the Herald News. It seems like only people who work at WSAR would know, and whoever they told, and so on. The fact that you mentioned this before it was in the Herald shows that you are close to someone at WSAR.

So what about all the other new people commenting on the Herald's site today blindly defending Herren and his awesome radio show? Just coincidence I suppose.

Here's another point of view, if Herren was so good to Eddie, why would he file a complaint with the radio's management that Herren was a bully?

RadioFree said...

Phillomena --

Here is an important lesson you need to learn as you embark on your journey as a citizen journalist -- or blogger.

Before you make claims regarding possessing information pertaining a particular activity which could possibly call into question that person's character, you must first have evidence to support your claim or a number of sources to back up your assertion.

This is a handy tip I used on the air, because I always liked to back up my opinion with fact.

In regard to your allegation that I was "going into the radio station late at night consistantly after she left her postion. NOT TO GET BOXES." You need to produce evidence that this is in fact true or else you enter the realm of libel -- which is something I intend to take incredibly seriously.

Now, for my part, I can produce airline tickets from TF Green airport, witnesses from US Airways as well as from people in Fort Meyers, Florida that I was in another part of the country during the majority of the time period between my resignation and when I entered the building with the permission of management at WSAR -- a person who I have known for three years who saw both my mother and I in the building retrieving baby items -- and a witness I asked to join me when I entered the building for the final time to return my key and sign COBRA paperwork. It's called covering your ass -- and it's about making sure that people can't accuse you of stupid crap.

You better be ready to defend your statement with some kind of evidence.

This is not a joke, this is not a game or a spectator sport -- this is my life. A life that has been turned upside down by those who think people like me are worth nothing because we don't have as much money as they do. I'm done with being a victim. I did not make the decision to come forward lightly, and certainly am not stupid enough to do so without having a PILE of hardcore evidence to back up my assertions.

So let's have it.

When did I enter the building?
Who was with me when I entered the building?
What happened when I was in the building?
How long was I in the building?
And finally -- who are your sources?

You want to make a claim as serious as the one you have, I'm ready to be serious as a heart attack. And believe me, I have no problem asking Google to track your IP address if need be.

Waiting for your response -- or feel free to email me at radiokeri@gmail.com

Yeah Keri and didn't you have Eric Poulin's baby, lol? I demand a DNA test immediately, lol. Lefty I think you need to put some of these fools in check, seriously, are we still on the same crap from last year's campaign? Didn't the Karam/Correia camp basically force Poulin to have to refute those manufactured rumors in an ad and then he was criticized by Karam's talking heads for doing the ad and having the guts to stand up to this type of crap?

Might it be possible that Keri liked that Poulin had a platform of ideas and could actually speak well and describe what he wanted to do for the city? Nope, I guess not, he must have slept with her and got her pregnant, lol. This is exactly why good people typically don't run for office in Fall River, when you get too close to the truth and start making it public the 'ol boy network starts to make up things to discredit you and tries to shut you down. I guess the strategy worked with Keri, it got her to move on, looks like Poulin is next on the list and then what, does the city officialy belong to Bob Karam and Bob Correia now that all opposition has been silenced and crushed? My God you people are sad!

Lefty said...

When I blogged a very simple quick statement that there is always more than one side to a story, little did I realize the mess that was to follow.

I would like to remain, objective and fair on this, but have to say what I've read so far certainly does not speak well for WSAR.

This is obviously a heated topic that lots of people have an opinion, but let's keep the comments honest, clean, respectful, and fair. When the conversation disintegrates into argument and trash talk, it becomes a conversation not worth having.

Who is lying and who is telling the truth? Amazingly most of us think we know the truth without having any first hand knowledge. Where ever the truth lies it is a sad story all the way around.

Anonymous said...

The truth is that the truth is finally starting to come out in good 'ol Fall River. Bob Karam is really not a good person and the Herald who had endorsed Bob Correia for Mayor last year has finally started to realize that he isn't a great guy either.

Bobby Karam finally exposed. Bob Correia finally getting his just desserts in at least 1 major local media outlet. And now in today's Herald News an editorial calling out Bob Correia and his sycophant 6on the City Council.

To them it must feel like the sky is falling and their world is crumbling. To us it feels like the truth is finally getting out there about these people and maybe Fall River will finally change for the better in the future.

Hi, I would like to have the opportunity to clear up an assertion here which ties directly to myself.
While I truly enjoy and appreciate the opportunity to voice the morning show 9- 10, M-Friday on WSAR, I have never had any discussions, nor would consider hosting the afternoon show or any other show. I have a day job where I run three newspapers and raise two kids while also appearing on both Portuguese and Spanish programming. And like everyone else I need time for "me."
Unfortunately, assumptions are often made which confuse facts with speculation.
While i truly appreciate the support and confidence shown here, i would ask to be left out of the drama (for which i have played no role) and have people tune in to when I am actually on the air and not listening for me when I will not be on the air.
I can not promise to fill the shoes of other hosts who filled this slot prior to myself, I can only promise to do my best, be ethical, fair and always tell you the truth about Fall River as I can confirm it or know it to be.

Thank you for your time,
Ric Oliveira
