Eddie Garcia's letter on Fall River Blog

This post has been modified and cleaned up to correct some errors and clarify some points. I apologize to Eddie Garcia for not doing a better job at proofing this before publishing.

I was a bit stunned to receive a letter from WSAR's Eddie Garcia. The subject read 'your reporting' and went on to say the characterization of his relationship with Mike Herren was incomplete. It took me a few seconds to realize that Eddie was copying me on an email to the Herald News.

The letter which I have posted in full and unedited on Fall River Blog, goes on to state that Garcia's internal memo was excerpted apparently without Garcia's permission in an article in yesterday's Herald News.

I had just posted earlier today that his 'memo' seems to add credibility to Keri Rodrigues' charges and now I was wondering if that was really the case. I took Eddie's email as an opportunity to contact him and we had a brief exchange.

Eddie said that yes, there had been issues between him and Mike Herren and he certainly was not denying that now. His letter to the Herald was in no way a reflection on Keri's filed complaint, but his complaint was an internal matter and he did not appreciate the Herald publishing that information without his permission or without even telling them they planned to excerpt it. Eddie made it clear that whatever issues he has had with Herren he has tried to resolve in a professional manner and that did not include having these issues discussed and debated in a public forum.

I have to agree that the Herald News was wrong to print Eddie Garcia's letter without first getting his permission and unfair to remove sentences that added context.

It is not just the Herald News. Keri must have submitted this e-mail without Eddie's permissions which is not so nice.
Interesting that he trusts Mike enough to have his kids sleep over.

What business was it of Keri to submit an email from a third party to the Herald? Much less the Herald to print it without at least checking with the author for authenticity. They certainly used it out of context, but who knows how Keri submitted it? She could have taken out lines that didn't work in her favor.

First she takes a hack job, now she leaves the city to take another job so she could sue her former employers. What a mess.

Keri, get a clue.

That letter WSAR clearly forced him to write to the editor was laughable. I was only afraid of Mike 2 maybe 3 times but not all the time. I am sure once he has another job he will be able to tell the real story but for now I don't blame him for trying to keep his job, it's a safe bet Herren and his cronies forced him into writing the letter, Eddie was clever enough to do what they wanted to make them happy yet clearly his letter still makes Mike and the station look ridiculous, they just aren't smart enough to realize it. I was only afraid of him sometimes, lol. Please!

Eddie admitted he wrote the stuff about Mike so the idea that Keri took anything out is null and void. Since it was an authentic letter from Eddie the Herald wasn't wrong to run it with or without his permission. If it wasn't authentic that would have been wrong but it is the real deal and backs up what Keri was saying that there are problems with Herren. Seems like people are angry that Keri was smart enough to collect documentation that proves her case. Too bad for you, she's smart and Herren isn't. As far as the Herald removing sentences that added context, that is a smokescreen, did you expect them to run the whole letter? Of course they couldn't, so of course they had to excerpt it and they I'm sure they didn't remove anything that added context or that was meant to put things out of context. Why not post Eddie's entire original letter here and not the "they twisted my arm" letter to the editor? Then you will get the real picture and not the spin.

wait a minute. The Herald had every rigght to print the email. They received it from Keri and, if you read the actual story, they do state that they did contact Garcia about hsi email, but he refused to comment.
It would have gone a lot smoother for Eddie if he had just commented to them the day before the story ran. For him now to write a letter and accuse The Herald of anything is ridiculous. They had every right to print hsi e-mail, especially after they contacted him and gave him a chance to comment on the email or anything else.
That's just good journalism

I love this! I beats watching the soap operas and reality shows. Hey, Boo Boo why don't you put all this on cable access? Never mind you couldn't make a buck off it.

Yeah Eddie seems to be really upset that the Herald took excerpts from his letter. I guess that means he's never read a newspaper. That would have been one hell of a long story if they included his entire letter to Doug Tweedy and the story about Keri as well. They didn't change anything around that would make anybody misinterpret what he was saying about Mike, and they attempted to contact him and everyone else at the station and he denied. No legal legs to stand on Eddie, sorry.

Plus, it's just painfully obvious that he wrote this to stop Herren from wrecking his life too. Once his name popped up in that last article, Herren probably already sicked the dogs in Ed's kids and car. And he's only "sometimes" afraid of Mike...

Eddie has his own blog why not post
the origingal entire letter there to clear the air ?!?!?!??!

I too think Eddie will get run out of town now so I don't blame him for writing the letter to the Herald News. Isn't there any legal recourse of retaliation??

Why not post the entire original letter right here or if you ask Eddie if you can do that is he going to say no comment yet again?

While the Herald may have the right to print Garcia's email I think professional courtesy should have been given. At the very least they could have told him it was going to be used.

I can only imagine the stress, tension, and embarrassment of having an internal memo made public.

That said, if Eddie Garcia has any interest in making his memo available I would post it.

The Herald did give professional courtesy, they contacted him and told him they were planning on using it and his response was "no comment." As long as he wasn't claiming the memo was not authentic, which he wasn't, in fact he vouched for its authenticity, then there was no reason not to run it. I understand Eddie was upset after it ran because it jeopardizes his job there and I'm sure he was told that when he was forced to write his ridiculous letter to the editor "clarifying" the situation. One can only hope he will find a new job and that he will be free to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth someday.

No, they did not tell me they had the memo and planned to use it.
They simply asked me if I had filed a grievance.

I have no comment on any WSAR internal matters.
Please do not contact me or any member of my family.

Mr. Garcia, can you confirm that you had filed a complaint with WSAR management on Aug. 1 about the intimidation that you have faced at the hands of Mike Herren.

Thanks for your time.

Can you comment on anything further?

Are you still employed there? I hear you haven't been on the air for more than a week.

The line in the Letter to the Editor that Ed may have been intimidated by Herren "a couple, three times, but not intimidated ALL the time" is reminiscent of battered spouse defending the batterer. For example, "But there were far more times when he was a good friend to me."

Oh, and the critical omitted sentence...

"This may well be because Michael Herren has been noncompliant with any admonitions he may have received, I obviously have no way of knowing this."

How does that change anything???
Who cares WHY Herren was intimidating colleagues? Whether there were admonitions, or if Herren was noncompliant with those admonitions, it doesn't excuse his behavior intimidating Eddie.

"Mike goes to bars and screams to his friends about what a rotten SOB I am." Wow, sounds like the foundation of a solid friendship.

At least Keri has left WSAR and is out of town. I feel sorry for the rest of the staff at WSAR who were witnesses to the abuse as described in the MCAD complaint, but also have the desire to retain employment.

I don't understand the importance of Eddie posting here for us to listen to the show a few days ago. Is having Ed and Mike co-host a show supposed to lead us to ignore the email that was printed in the paper?

Finally, Eddie don't feel bad that your e-mail was printed in the paper. The blame goes to Herren for intimidating you and to the Karams for allowing it to happen multiple times.

Herren is a bully, the spin now I guess is that he is only a bully that threatens people sometimes and not as often as Keri said. Great! Things look so rosy down at WSAR. NOT!

Keri was 100% correct to free herself from the grasp of the Herrens and Karams completely by leaving the area. It is a shame that it came to that but Eddie my advice to you is to do the same thing, get away from WSAR, as far away from the Herrens and Karams as you can.

KERI HAS NOT LEFT ARE JUST ANOTHER LIE AMONG THE MANY OTHERS HE HAS TOLD

Anonymous said...

Herren has a long history of abusing the people around him to try and control his enviroment. He is a very insecure person.

Oh no, I've definitely left. :)

Keri we can't trust what you say. Haven't you been reading the comments?

Speaking of trusting what Keri says, her accusations all seem pretty legit. She's filed a MCAD report and put it on a blog. It sounds legit and she's standing behind it.

For others to call Herren a bully and straight out accuse him of stuff isn't right. Not without you providing a verifiable source.

Why in God's name would I post anything at all concerning this matter on a blog whose focus is Democratic politics in Virginia's Sixth Congressional District?

Well i guess the old adage that you reap what you sow rings true at WSAR. Well boys, Harvest time is coming. Get ready to pay up! I am completely objective in this matter and have no allegiences to neither side.
I actually appreciate Mike and all he has done for Fall River, but I also feel sorry for him in the aspect that the High school failed him, when they allowed him all the special priveledges. Never holding him accountable for unacceptable behavior.
Now it seems that Wsar has done the same thing. I simply ask what/who are the similiar factors/enablers/contributors?
I am not freeing Michael of his rsponsibility for his behavior, only pointing out that if a dog shits on your lawn and you tell him good boy, what do you expect will happen in the future! We don't need Jeanie Dixon for this!

Eddie,

Because you seem to want to set the record straight and it is your forum I just thought you would want to use it but now I see that does not make sense.

Sorry you are in the middle of these Fall River High School antics
the city really needs to grow up!

I find the second link that Roger provided very offensive. That type of language shouldn't have any place on this blog, the f word is just as offensive as the n word and I can't believe there are primates still advocating for its usage.
