Journal Register Sells Herald News

The Journal Register announced today that it was selling both the Herald News and the Taunton Daily Gazette. Gatehouse Media is paying 70 million dollars for the two daily papers and 5 non-daily publications.

In their press release Gatehouse Media says that "The Fall River and Taunton assets fit extremely well with our existing base of Massachusetts-area publications...", but go on to say "... due to their proximity to our existing operations, we will be able to benefit from the cost savings and revenue generation opportunities that are inherent in being part of a cluster."

Does the sale of the Herald News to Gatehouse media mean a better local paper or one that loses its local identity and whose content is compromised by the 'cost savings inherent in being part of the cluster'?

I don't think much of the paper now, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say "improvement" just based on statistics.
